I am interested in buying myself a "Swell Center Jack" by Canal Street Cutlery when I have the money for it. I have a few questions about their knives and they are as followed: 1. How is their fit and finish? 2. How good is their quality control? 3. How good of an edge do they have out of the box? 4. How good is their heat treating on their D2 blades?

I have a D2 canittler in amber bone (2007)
really nice knife, thick blade and well made, pretty good F&F (no flaws IMO)
out of the box it was fairly sharp, a quick strop took the edge to a shiny level of sharpness, sharpens really good and nicely, cut cardboard, lots of it and it held fairly well

I'm pleased with mine (only one right now) and would suggest the brand, would buy more for sure if I find them
maybe others who have more experience may chime in... ;)

I had a CSC Folding Hunter but I recently donated it to a fundraising event.

The fit and finish were very good on mine. It was a large knife with relatively tight springs. The edge on mine was just OK out of the box. 420HC steel, I think, but I don't remember for sure. Polished only on the mark side.

It was one of the first knives I bought when I started collecting knives a little over 3 years ago. It was the only CSC knife I had. I plan to get more though eventually.

I just never did use the knife so I put it towards a good cause.

I think you will like CSC should you decide to try one. It's a brand that often gets overlooked but they are definately worth checking out.

The swell center jack is a stout and tuff handfull of a knife. It has weight to it but not over bearing. It isn't what I would call a large knife but it isn't a small office knife either. Just be sure and check the blade fall before buying. I have seen a few that could have been better in that category. [ didn't say all....... I said a few. Here's an image of the Stag ones that AG Russell had produced with his Stag. Great knife and a venture in knife production that the timid wouldn't even try. Not just anybody can do this. D-2 blades to boot.

They are a solid company and you will most likely be pleased with your purchase.
I had a three blade cannitler that had some issues. I emailed CSC and described the issue. That same day I had an email from them apologizing for the knife getting through QC and requesting that I send it back for replacement. The replacement knife was absolutely flawless. They are a good company as far as my experience has been.

That's true about the response Canal Street has for customer satisfaction. I bought 8 of their Gunstocks for gifts and one wasn't quite up to snuff. I sent it back to them and they returned the very same knife with every correction that could be imagined done to it. They must have taken the whole knife apart and honed it to perfection.

Here are the CSC Swell Center Jack's I have!! Just had to send one back with spaces in the liners, that's about it. Very different pattern.

Rusty. Do you like to carry that knife like I do? I put this knife away and pretty much forgot about it up until a few weeks ago and haven't been able to leave the house without it since. It's starting to ride in the pickup along side the GEC harness jack. Kinda like a pair of dogs in the back without having to yell at 'em.

Greg, I have carried the top one briefly. I have fairly large hands and the knife fits just right, it does not bother me too much in the pocket either. The one I have handled more than the others is the Pearl though, awesome in the hand.

Thanks Russell. I have had my eye on the Pearlie for a while. For anybody that is interested, CS's D-2 blades come factory sharp. Not blunt or honed to perfection. Just factory sharp. Most users could get by without putting a new edge to them for a few weeks easily.

Canal Street knives are a high quality.

And as other have said, if the knife has faults, do not be afraid to send it back for correction
Their Customer Service is excellent, and they will take care of the knife.

I have had this happen twice.
So, if you are prepared to send a knife back for tweaking, then get Canal Street.

I cannot say there is the same high level of Customer Service in other manufactures

Bottom line, CS make a fine knife

Anyone have some in-hand pics? The stag is beautiful, but I'm actually tempted by the chestnut scaled version.

Money wise, that would be the best bet.IMHO For something special I would look a bit further. Like some of the ones Rusty posted.

Not so much the price, but due to the fact I remember that barn from when I was stationed at Ft. Campbell.

Damn nice knives...as I have said...im going to go shopping soon .. these knives look extremely nice-thanks guys for educating us about this brand.

Which barn is that?
Greg

Hoover barn in Hopkinsville, Ky. A.G. Russell's site has a typo with "NY" instead of "KY" on the description. Don't remember why, but the wife & I drove by it to check it out one time on our way to a restaurant in Hopkinsville.

Neeman...

You're correct that's were Canal Street Cut. is located...but what is being referred to is the reclaimed wood a from an old barn in Pa. that's being used on a new run of knives from CSC...and currently A.G. has a Swell Center made from this material.

I have one Canal Street, a half moon trapper in 14-4CrMo (The Latrobe version of 154CM.)

I found the fit and finish to be top notch. At least as good as the GECs I've handled.

IIRC, the OOB edge was good, though since I resharpen every knife I get as soon as I get it, OOB sharpness makes little impression on me.

I found the heat treat of the 14-4CrMo to be excellent. I measured my blade at 58, but cannot comment on their D2 as I don't have any from them.

If I found a design by Canal Street that I liked, I would not hesitate to buy it.
