Way back on 8/11/05 Textoothpk announced the arrival of his #21 CSC Swing guard. Well today I took delivery of my CSC "stagged" Trapper #058, and it really is a good looking knife. Equal or better in quality to any I have seen regardless of tang stamp. The neat part is I got it and another really nice knife in trade for that Mint 51OT I was asking about when I first came to this forum by way of El Lobo. I feel like I got a good deal and I really hope the other side makes a nice profit. The Trapper was not and I guess is not scheduled for the limited run of 25 like the Swing guard was.

A. G. Russell has announced a new exclusive limited edition (100 sets) set of Canal Street Cutlery knives, a fixed drop point hunter and a matching slipjoint, both in African giraffe bone. His listing is slightly confusing because the folder in the set is listed three times as a slim trapper, but in the description and picture is obviously a premium stockman. Be that as it may, this knife set deserves a look-see. Like the other drop point hunters, A.G. says it is D-2 steel with 12% chromium, and Rc 59-61. Schrade showed ladle tests of their Schrade+ 440A stainless to be 17% chromium, so this D-2 is Stain-less? Any way, it is nice enough to make me want one!

Oh, and for those who don't have the earlier jigged amber bone introductory set, he is still listing those. That set IS with a two blade trapper and the drop point hunter, limited to 500 sets.

In case that was sort of a question about D-2...

It will still stain quicker than the AUS series or the 440 series of steels...but not like most carbon steels. It resists a patina SOMEWHAT, but will spot or pepper, if left wet. I have a few knives with D-2 and think they are some of my favorites for overall steel characteristics.

P.S.
If that wasn't a question..... :o

When I got home from the Spirit of Steel Show my CSC Drop Point #003 was waiting for me. The scales match up with the previously aqquired CSC Trapper really well. Mine is the same knife that is up for donations. I think someone is going to be very pleased to add that knife to their collection.

CSC is making knives using 420 stainless now. They have expanded the pattern variety and shipped a few SFO knives in Sambar stag. So far we have seen the one drop point hunter fixed blade pattern (in amber peachseed jig bone, oxblood burl wood, giraffe bone, and stag jig bone), the swing guard (in Sambar stag, stag jig amber bone), a trapper (in peachseed jig amber bone, oxblood burl wood, ), and a stockman (in royal blue basket weave jig bone, amber stag jig bone, giraffe bone), swell center whittler (in sambar stag, amber stag jig bone), muskrat (amber stag jig bone), and four blade congress (in red stag jigged bone, Amber stag jig bone, Sambar stag).

One of each, please! :o

I'm no expert, these is what I understand from what I've seen mostly around the general forum:

Adding chromium to steel does two things, form chromium carbides which help resist abrasion, and form chromium oxides which help resist corrosion.

To be called stainless a steel must have at least 13% chromium, the chromium oxides formed are what make it rust resistant, the chromium carbides formed are what make it hard to sharpen.

D2 was designed as a tool steel for making dies, the chrome was meant to make it resist abrasion not rust, if they had added a little bit more chromium they could have legally called it stainless.

A search on the general forum should bring up some good and surely more precise info.

Sheathmaker, glad you're as happy with your CS knife as I am with mine. I still have the brochure of your excellent work

(Guys... he is a real craftsman)

But I'm looking through my stuff, still disorganized, to find what it is I need made.

Out of curiosity, I made up a list of all the pattern/material combinations I had seen so far from Canal Street Cutlery. I mean there is no time better to start writing history than the present, right?

Drop Point Hunter - amber peachseed jig bone, oxblood burl wood, giraffe bone, stag jig bone
Swing Guard - Sambar stag, stag jig bone
Trapper - stag jig bone, amber peachseed jig bone, oxblood burl wood
Stockman - royal blue basket weave jig bone, stag jig bone, giraffe bone
Swell Center Whittler - Sambar stag, amber peachseed jig bone
Muskrat - stag jig bone
Four Blade Congress - red stag jigged bone, Amber peachseed jig bone, Sambar stag

My lists are seldom ever 100% correct or complete, so I sent it to Joe Hufnagel at CSC for confirmation and correction. Here is his reply:
