Hello All,

I've got a Canastota pocket knife and read they were only made between 1875-1895. Found an Canastota Knife Co catalog online. It appears the knife is a No. 3620. It has the tortoise shell scales, brass liners and silver bolsters. I can find little else. Do people collect these and does anyone have pictures from this makers? It is a cool knife.

Never heard of it nor seen one but I agree that it is very cool. It’s from a day when men would use their pocket knives for hunting.

It has a proper gut hook!

Wow, ivory cheapest handle. 8.33 cents wholesale, 40% markup = $1.17 retail????? Inflation and the magic of compound interest are amaaaaazing.
Is 40 % too high/low?

"Knives are sold the same as jewelry. The markup varies from dealer to dealer. I have seen as low as 5 percent and as high as 100 percent. The usual markup for most dealers ranges from 30 to 50 percent; the better or higher-end knives get the higher markup" - found online with the google.

That's not a gut hook. That's a ladies knife and the hook was known as a button hook. It was used to pull buttons through the buttonhole such as on the gloves that most women wore at the time. That balloon pattern was also known as the Jenny Lind or Buttercup.

Nice find, you don't come across Canastotas very often.

PS - Jody you beat me by seconds! LOL!
