Hi,

I know this may be a long shot, but my wife and I are going to Cancun, Mexico next month, anything good in the way of knives to see down there?

Thanks,

Mark

IF there weren (i dont know of anything) chances are on the trip back they would be taken the the crooked cops down there

I have never had a problem putting them in my checked luggage. I have heard of them being stolen by crooked airline employees, but have never had it happen.

I have probably done this a dozen times over the last couple years both domestic and international flights have been no problem.

Cancun is a fenced-off isthmus where Mexicans aren't even allowed to enter unless they work in a hotel.

If you rent a car and leave the confines of Cancun, you may be able to find some machetes for sale. Not much else.

Everything is overpriced junk IMO. They'll try to sell you a machete for $40, along with a sheath. There's an ace hardware down the road going towards the airport that sells them same as here. Junk knives, $5 otf junk autos they'll ask $30 or more for.

It's not the place to buy knives. T-shirts, leather items, tequila, etc., but not knives. I never saw any moderate quality knives there, just junk. I looked all over too. Joe

CWL, have you ever been in Cancún? If you think about it for a minute, maybe you will conclude that it's normal for a touristic place to have more foreigner visitors than locals, but probably there is something wrong with the common sense nowadays.

Mark:

I've been in Cancún a couple of times (yes, as a tourist) and certainly you won't find any special knives (SAKs and some spanish brands, not much more). So focus on enjoying the beach and the nature (or the night life, if that's your preference).

In the state of Oaxaca they make some nice ornamental knives, in the state of Jalisco there is a city called Sayula where some families are famous for the knives they manufacture (fully functional, not just for show), but those regions are far from Cancún.

Enjoy your visit.

Orozcov,

I have been to Cancun several times, mostly for business meetings if you can believe it. I have always thought how despicable it was for the developers of Cancun & the police to keep the "natives" outside in order to make Western tourists "feel safe".

I've travelled throughout Mexico for both business and pleasure. I count several officers of PEMEX as personal friends -and suppliers of Cuban cigars. (In 2001, a business associate didn't come back from lunch, it later turned out he was murdered in a botched kidnapping attempt.)

These sort of things never happen in Canada. I would never want to vacation in Mexico. Too hot. Too dangerous. Too corrupt.

Besides, Canada has more boreal nature than the either the US or Mexico. Some really beautiful woods there...at least in Northern Ontario. I always travel north when I need a getaway.

Excuse me, but I have seen the same thing said about New York, Chicago, Los Angeles, Houston, Miami, the list goes on. I have spent quite a lot of time in Mexico, as well as points south and the people, with the usual exceptions, are warm and generous. Newpapers and internet roumors spread the picture of ruthless gangs every where, it is just not true. As far as knives goes I agree that there are not a lot too see in that area, unless you want an over priced Machetes. But enjoy your trip, it is nice down there, I do prefer Oaxaca to Cancun, but then no one wants to see me in a speedo (blindness sets in).

Canadians comprise a large segment of tourists to Mexico.

Sounds like you have never been.

If you can get some inexpensive but decent folders and take them with you, they make great items you can sell or give away to tour guides, etc. None of the Mexicans I saw there had any decent knives at all. Poverty is rampant. (Don't forget to tip as heavily as you can; many of those people go home to dirt floors, and this is no overstatement.) If you just play the tourist and see Chitzen Itza and some of the other places, I'd just take a knife with me. Remember, if you buy .999 silver, don't count on it; things are cheaply made and anything you forget and have to buy there will be marked up.

You may find some decorative knives on your tours off the beaten path, but you may have to ask some of the natives. It's not something you'll see displayed on the tables.
