My love for traditionals started at a very young age , and what drew me in was the "candy wrapper" scales that i fondly remember my grandpa edc'ing and useing . I may be dating myself here but remember when they used to sell the loose candy at kroger and other grocery stores by the pound ? specifically the brachs carmel pieces used to be wrapped in stripy colorful foil wrappers ( god bless america , i loved those ) . I personaly dont own any because ive always been told that they crack and dryrot over time , anyways ... lets see some vivid celluoid , with all the stripes and glitter and candy colors .

Couldn't have been that long ago that they used to sell those bulk candies (Brachs and the like) at the grocery store; my grandma used to have a dish full of them on her coffee table, and that would've been maybe 20 years ago or so. I've always been intrigued by those colorful old knives as well, although the only thing even close to them that I own are some GEC acrylics, and none of them are of the colorful candy-striped variety you're describing (although this year's acrylic Beer Scout is certainly glittery :D). Looking forward to seeing some of these knives, especially the older ones!

btb01 - ya , about twenty or so years ago sounds about right . my how time flies .. yup , you still see a lot of vintage ones in antique and pawn shops , most have missing/busted/trashed scales .

I like those too, but I don't have any pictures to share. I will however be following this thread to see what others can share.

The closest I have are

The one on the bottom is an old Challenge I believe. It came in terrible condition but I cleaned up the scales best I could since there's initials carved in it.

Next is possibly my most prized knife. An old Hammer brand.

My son picked it out for me for my birthday when he was only 4. His idea and his choice my wife wanted the sterling silver watch fob knife but he insisted. The scales are folded steel with the red being a plastic overlay but I still like it alot.

Seems Hammer Brand did a fine job back in the day with their colorful celluloid. That's a nice one Neko and I can imagine it means a lot to you. This green one was also made by Hammer Brand (1945-1955) I love the color. It's the most recent gift from my wife while the key chain is the last gift I received from my mom. Obviously they're both priceless to me.

neko , that old red hammer is what im talking about .. dont know if thats culluoid but it sure is purty ;)

I'm looking to pick up some more old Hammer knives because I really do like the colorful handles.
I'm glad to see a thread about these because it always seemed that they were not highly thought of nowadays.

Redsparrow - it's funny how the price stops mattering completely when someone gives you a heartfelt gift.
We both have knives that were bargain, mass produced and common that mean the world to us. I wouldn't have it any other way.

Literally looks like someone crushed up Christmas candy and made slabs out of it!

My 81.

SVTFreak, I've seen you post that one before, and I thought about it specifically when I read the OP's post. :D

Svtfreak , i like that ! i would probably lick it to make sure , it does look like crushed fruit candycanes. lol nice..

one thing is for sure , it would.be hard to loose these types of knives . my pop used to have one that had a wasp or yellowjacket pattern to it ( yellow, brown, burntorange) i think it was an old schrade or camillus maybe ? i really sought it after he passed but could not find it.nor have ever seen another like it since.

Arathol That Cattle King by Bull Dog is a real gem, fine shield too. I rather suspect that those Bull Dogs are in fact acrylic rather than cell, but no bad thing for that. Cell's notorious gassing habits make it an unstable visitor to the knife collection:eek: But the old Cell knives are undoubtedly beautiful, but you never know when they might start fading away...:blue:

GEC does some very decent acrylics, Lava Lamp, Church Glass, Pumpkin Patch. I missed out on a 66 Jack in Pumpkin Patch by opting for a Rotten Banana Bone instead, one of my few knife buying regrets...:o

Here's an Outlaw Jack GEC76 one of 25 (No.13) in Rootbeer Float Acrylic

I have 2 Imperial wrap/shell knives, but neither is colorful. :( I kinda like the muted earthy tones, though.

I bought the little trick knife because it was dirt cheap and I liked the striped pattern and because I'd never seen one before and thought the tricky opening/closing was cool. I'm easily amused. :p The bigger one with the wonky blades was an extra in a an auction for a little Buck knife that I wanted. And it just dawned on me as I looked at it closely to take photos that GEC's pheasant acrylic is kind of that same color and pattern. Cool.

Not a wrap/shell knife, but I also have this little Henckels that I think is celluloid. Can anyone confirm if it is and whether or not I should quarantine it away from my other Henckels knives? Apologies in advance if this isn't the right thread to ask.

arathol , who manufactured the three greenish glitter ones you have there ?nice collection .

Those are Christmas Tree Celluloid. The top two are Utica Kutmaster, the small cattle knife is Ulster Knife Co.

3rd generation BKC #587 Coonstripe Celluloid from 1993.
It is celluloid unfortunately :( and has started to deteriorate a bit. :( :(
Fortunately the blades are stainless. It is the only old Bulldog celluloid that has gone bad on me so far. I have a couple in duckfeather that are still ok.
