Today I picked up two water bottle holders ordered from Off-The-Map Outfitters. One to go with my Falcon II and the other as a ride alone rig.

I have the Snow Peak Solist titanium cookset on order and this was nicely reviewed by BushcraftBrainTrustover here:

While waiting for that, I decided to try out a couple of gel heat cannisters that I've been looking at for a while. One little cheap system comes with a baffle attachment and two rods to convert your canister into a mini-stove. Clearly, these things aren't the fastest, or the lightest, but they are compact and easy to use.

So I wanted to pack it up in the bottle holder with a water bottle, GI cup, mini-stove and canisters to see if it would all fit. Did so nicely. I was able to put two cannisters in the front pocket and had room for my fire steel and instant coffee packets.

Thats the little stove nestled on top of my nalgene bottle. The GI-cup nests on top of that, or I can nest the GI cup on the bottom of the cup. Unfortantely, I can't get a heat canister in the column unless I go to a smaller bottle.

Well, certainly not the quickest boil times in relation to Bushman5's posts. I pegged 14 minutes to boil of rather cold water. Next time I will put some tin foil in the pack to serve as a pot cover for the GI-cup and see how much that speeds up the time. It should shave a couple of minutes.

Oh yeah...Brian Andrews and I also taste tested the 'NEW' Starbucks Instant coffee. It's expensive at about $1/cup for the packets. But, dang, they taste really good! This doesn't taste like instant at all and I'm pretty much a coffee snob. I don't i.v. it into my veins like Mentor does, but I know good from bad coffee. Even Brian, who usually tells me how silly my ideas are and would have jumped on tramping my expensive yuppy packets for his simpler cowboy coffee was pretty impressed. This stuff is GOOD!

So overall, this is a pretty decent system. I don't really need to put two heat canisters in the front pocket, but it is nice to know that I can get two in. Makes for a compact if somewhat slow cooking method, but one that works good enough when simple is all you want.

That is pretty nifty Ken. I bet that column would fit over a Trangia type stove. That would be a neat setup!

Yeah, I have to admit, I tried instant coffee once, and swore I never would again :barf: My coffee pot died at home awhile ago, and I swore I would never buy another one because I like cowboy coffee so much, and those stinking pieces of junk never last. I was even going to strain Ken's for him, but I guess he still didn't like that idea, because he showed up with his own :D

I was a bit skeptical, but it really is good stuff. Plus, I have never seen any drink package that small. It would be a cool addition to the pack. However, I might be a little afraid of getting caught with "Starbucks" in the woods :D

Great setup Ken!!!

You aint kiddin...Those Vias from Starbucks are really good!!! The best instant Ive ever had hands down. Actually tastes like a brewed cup!

Great coffee for the backcountry.

Enjoy those bottleholders. Maxpedition made a great piece of gear in those... I hear they are discontinued though... Anyone hear the same??

Oh! OK. I can see that b/c the 10x4 seems like such a popular item.

hey.... thats my 8000th post... Dang.

Okay, re-organizing the stand alone. It turns out I CAN get a water bottle + baffle + GI-cup + heat canister (gel fuel) all in the bottle compartment. This is great. It frees up the center pouch for a PSK.

I've added first aid, garbage bags (shelter) and a full fire kit to the pouch. Also used the molle clips to bolt on my RC-4 to the side of the pack and added a beefy strap for carrying. This is a nice little system!
