I have been making a lot of canister Damascus and thought I would share some things I have learned. I have learned a lot from this forum and maybe can help someone else.
I like to use 1" tubing. I have used 2" tubing but by the time I forged it thin enough to make a knife the ball bearings, or anything else in the can was stretched way out of shape. The 1" tubing keeps things closer to the real size.
I put the ball bearings, or chopped up wire cable, chain, etc. in the 5 1/2" long can and add the steel powder. I get mine from Jantz. I have a vibro etching tool and I run this up and down the can to get the powder all the way between what ever else is in the can.
I weld the can up and do not put paper or anything else in it.
I have seen some drill a pin hole in the can, but I do not do that.
As far as how I deal with the can after the billet is welded, well, I don't deal with the can. I forge the 5 1/2" can out to maybe 10 " long. By that time what ever is left of the can after decarb loss is paper thin. When I grind the blade out I never see any part of the can.
This picture is of chopped up pieces of wire cable and the 1084 steel powder.
