I bought a Rough Rider Canoe in yellow handles and I really like the feel of this pattern. Does anybody own one of these Rough Riders? I can only guess the Case, Bokers and queens must be a million times better. What say yall?

Oh no, now you've done it panch0!!!

Seriously, though, let's all try to keep the conversation and comparisons civil and on point so it doesn't get away from us.

Thanks in advance.

Yea what I really wanted to know about is the Canoe pttern and how you guys liked them. I didn't mean to sound like I was trying to compare brands so lets keep it civil. Cause at the first sound of gun fire I am out of here.;):D

While I dont have one of the RR canoe patterns I have purchased a couple other of their patterns off of ebay.

I am surprised at the quality of them so far. For the price they are a good deal...but then I never pay mor than $6.00 for one. They are a great way to see if a pattern is a good fit for you.

Wait till you pick up a GEC, or a Case or Schatt & Morgan.

That is the problem with slip joints. They grow on ya. They are what I carry instead of wearing jewelry. Plus they're useful.

I used to own a RR Canoe with yellow handle scales. The smaller pen blade was a little strong, but overall it was a really nice knife for the money. It even spilled some blood before I gave it away ;)

Hi,

A Case CV canoe is my favorite EDC. I like the pattern because of over-all slimness and the thin blades make for great slicers. Plus at about 3 5/8" in length, it's neither too long nor too short. And I bought it because I tried a RR mini-canoe and liked the pattern. My personal preferences lean more towards the Case and Boker canoes and even the RR's. Simply because I like the more pronounced canoe shape of the bolsters. The Queens are more rounded and softer looking.

And I've been messing around with a RR Barlow for the last couple of weeks. Now I'm waiting on a GEC Barlow.:D

So even though I think RR's are well made for the money and are good values, buying them can lead to further fiduciary damage if you aren't careful.

So enjoy your RR Canoe, or use it as encouragement to get a more up-scale model. It's a good but under appreciated pattern.

Well at least now I know that RRs are a gateway drug. They need to put a warning label on these knife boxes. It makes it easy to try out different patterns and then whamo another accidental ordering of a case knife or other brand of slippy. I really liked the feel of the Canoe, I know a better brand of knife can only be better feeling.

Canoes? Great pattern, one of my favorites. There's not too much they can't handle in my day-to-day life.

I EDC a Buck Canoe. It's an imported Buck, which I think are made by the folks who make Rough Rider knives, and I have to tell you, it is my favorite EDC. It is my first Canoe pattern, and it is awesome. Because it is a Buck, imported or not, it has the same awesome edge retention that all Bucks have, and even though the blades are a bit thicker then I would like, the wide main blade means it is thin enough at the cutting edge to work like a charm, and the smaller pen blade is also very rugged. It is very pocketable, with it's thin profile, but robust enough to handle heavy cutting and be comfortable in the hand. The fit and finish is first rate as well. I love this knife. Again, it is my favorite pocketknife.

Hi,

Don't forget, you're hanging out with a bunch of addicted enablers too. We're all ready to push each other over the edge.:D

Go on, you know you want it.:D:D:D

I am gonna carry the RR Canoe with me for a week to see if it works out before ordering a more expensive brand. If the RR can handle my day to day stuff which isn't too bad, just cutting up boxes I will get me one and give the stockman a couple of days of rest per week.

dalee thats why I keep coming back. I don't feel so guilty when I buy a knife cause you guys make me feel like I am doing a good thing.;):D

I have two Canoes, a Queen in Amber bone and a Boker in Red picked bone.
They are quite different.

The Queen is a very solid knife, where the main spear blade has a very thick spine and is a heavy blade for hard work, the pen blade is as thin as the main thick.
It is not a light knife, and I feel the weight in my pocket.

The Boker has much thinner blades, where the main spear blade is almost paddle shaped.
It is a much lighter knife that sits easily in the change pocket of a pair of jeans.

I really like the Queen as it screams quality, and give me real work.
Plus the F&F is excellent.
Wonderfully sharp after the normal rebeveling of a non-descript factory edge.

RR Old Yellow is I think, their best range and as you say, a gateway drug.....Skid Row=selling your house and living in a cardboard box with nothing but customs....there ARE worse fates!

Talking of slim knives, the RR Old Yellow Doctor is well worth a visit and doesn't cost an arm or a leg, unless you are completely incompetent at managing the snap....

The only Canoe I own is a lowly but well made Hen&Rooster Small Canoe or what I think CASE calls a Babybutterbean(better name) Jigged bone. Closed 3" /7.5cm . Spear/Pen in stainless, competent small slim knife from Germany. No wobble, decent finish. Good if you are having a Peanut overdose or fancy a change. For a small knife I still prefer a Pen from Böker or similar.

Case Baby Butterbean, and Queen #64. Probably my 2 favorite slipjoints.

That Baby Butterbean has one sweet long pull. I think Ken Erickson would like to see that.

Fine Bone on both of those boats.

CASE Bonestag and Queen Amber Stagbone, two of the best around.

That is not the kind of long pull that Ken Erickson was referencing in his post.
