Does anyone know of a good source for canoe plans online or otherwise? I'm looking for something I could build myself and use to paddle around the Chesapeake Bay and some of the surrounding creeks.

Chris, are you thinking a cedar/wood stip style of construction? I can recomend a good book if so, but I will not be able to dig it out until this evening or tomorrow.

Backwoodsman magazine has some canoe plans every so often. I've never tried to build a boat from any of these plans though. A friend gave me some issues of a magazine from the 90's called Messing About in Boats. It covered mainly small boats including canoes, jon boats and small sail boats, and most of them were custom made, or homemade.

Jim,

Thanks for the link. There is a ton of stuff on that site

knzn,

I'd love to try that kind of canoe or kayak, it's just a matter of whether I have the skill to do it.

The book I was talking about is called
"Canoecraft-A Harrowsmith illustrated guide to fine woodstrip construction."

It is written by Ted Moores and Merilyn Mohr. Copy rite date is 1983.

If you could hunt up a copy at the library or wherever it is a very interesting read if nothing else. I have wanted to build one of these for years, but just never got the "round-tuit."

Books at Amazon on related topics that I have not read--

Ray Mears has an episode about building a Birch Bark canoe. You might be able to find one of his DVD's on ebay.
