Hey Guys,

A group of friends and I are going on a 3 day canoe trip this weekend. We will be camping on the side of the river for 2 nites, so I packed some basic gear for the trip.

I'm hoping some of you would have suggestions for keeping my gear somewhat dry, right now I have my stuff (pack, sleeping bag, etc) in a 22 gallon zip lock bag, but I doubt it will keep everything dry for 3 days.

Any ideas?

Thanks,
Adam

I use 1 or 2 gallon ziplocks and put my clothes in them. If you pack the ziplock, then sit on it before zipping it up it squishes the air out and you can get a lot more stuff in a bag. THere are dry bags made for canoeing / kayaks

the link is to show what they look like.

Wally world probably has them if you want to go there.
I got one from Cabela's and it works great. I've never submerged it, but for rain or sitting in the bottom of a canoe it's great.
Enjoy your trip! take pix, post 'em here!

Dry bags are great at keeping stuff dry, but it's heavy and more expensive. For longer trips, we use regular garbage bags, sqeeze all the air out, then twist the end as tight as you can, but do not tie it up. Then we stick the twisted end in first into a compression bag. You can also bring a few extra bag easily. That said, all my cloths goes in a dry bag, sleeping bag and food goes into garbage bags.

Yep... what these guys said. I would spend the few pennies more and make sure you get freezer bags which are thicker and have better closures on them.

Also, get the contractor style garbage bags (clear if they got em to see your stuff) to line your pack with, Home Depot, etc. These things are heavy duty, won't tear, and are reusable for your garbage when you get home. Put your individual freezer bags in your lined pack and you are good to go.
Some wire twist ties to seal them off or single use bar-lock ties.

Have fun!
