Canoeist stabs bear to death in Ontario (w/6 in. hunting knife)

Good link Hardheart, thanx.

I have observed more than a few reports of black bears attacking humans in the past 8 years. We've had a few in Colorado recently.

I think the dogs OK.He used a BUCK hunting knife.Poor bear he didn't even have ATS-34 or some other super steel used on him!

Read the Free Republic article -- the man himself participates in the discussion. He's pretty laid-back about it all, except about the dog. He was really unhappy about the dog getting hurt.

Hey Guys....
With the close of the Spring Bear Hunt in Ontario we have an ever growing problem with black Bears in Ontario...
More and more people are being injured and rogue bears are up 500%.

I'm Very proud to say I'am part of the O.B.B.R.T. (Ontario Black Bear Relocation Team) in association with the Ministry of Natural Resources.

Last year we Relocated 19 Black Bear to new homes across Ontario and the United States.

This years Relocation program starts on Sept 01. 3 members of the team depart from S.Ontario to take part in the yearly program. This year hopefully we will relocated more than 19 of them to colder climates.

GReat job with a knife!!

Wow, i'm glad they both made it out ok. It's cool that he's from Waterloo, i used to live in Kitchener, which is right next door to Waterloo. Good to hear some interesting stories about the people back home.

Could be. I had a cat once. He was so big

(How big was he ??)

He was so big, the bear would have taken one look at him and turned around and walked away.

Aw, that's nothing. Cuddles the Hutt, my wife's cat, is so big and so mean she'd have chased down that bear and smacked it senseless. If she could have waddled fast enough, that is.

:)

it's just a little black bear. :) I'm guessing they're not real big there like on the coast. I run into quite a few hiking in the parks, though I'm not wanting to meet an angry one anytime soon. I'd guess it would not be a whole lot worse than a large dog attack. Most of the ones I've seen run 150-200. On a similar note, anyone see the black bear that got treed by the huge house cat? Pretty funny.

thats an amazing story, too bad there were injuries. great to hear that not only did the dog defend his owner but the owner protected his dog, this is quite possibly the only bear killed with a knife since that guy who named the ka-bar killed one in the 1920's. anyone else heard of bears bieng taken down with a knife?

Usually you here the super spectacular stories of a guy killing grizzlies with his knife. There was a guy in the early 20th century, an african ranger, who killed a lion with a knife. He spent months in the hospital though. Again his dog came to help. Lions are just big cats afterall. Six inch knife also.

Dogs are the best early warning system and best first line of defense. A 6" knife beats a SAK every time !!!
