"Can't be that hard to make a knife" Those were the words I told myself a couple months ago when I decided to make my own knives. I had just gotten a custom knife gave to me from a friend and I thought, wow it was $300, I could easily make that knife. Probably Better!! So I went online researched and thought, easily knock this out in a weekend. I was so wrong.. What I did find was a new and amazing hobby! I have a new respect for knifemakers, and I found myself looking at things different now. I can't look at a piece of metal without wondering if it would make a good knife now! It took me two months to make a knife that I was happy with. I broke blades, ground some too thin, got frustrated, thought I had it figured out, only to realize I don't. Now I split my free time between making knives and golf.

Anyways, just wanted to say hello. Happy to be here! I've learned a lot and hope to always keep learning!! To those thinking they can make a knife easily, it's not as easy as it looks, but it's far more rewarding then you think! I look forward to being part of this community!

You sure learn a lot along the way. :)
I suggest that every knife knut at least make the attempt.
You may find a new hobby.
You may develop some new skills.

At the very least, you'll gain a bunch of insight into what goes into making a quality knife, just like you said.

Welcome to the fold...

... or is that fray?

:D

Right on man glad to hear you didn't give up easily! Welcome to bladeforums and be sure to check out the knifemakers area if you haven't already.

Wait until you start a Damascus integral dagger with ivory handled fluting. And no, I'm not quite there yet, but soon. It's a hobby with a never ending learning curve. Once you get good at grinding, you start to think of doing your own heat treating, that's a entire field in and of itself, then on to leather working, and so forth. Have fun!
