My GF's brother is coming to stay with us from LA for christmas. I have decided to go with a knife as a gift (surprise). He isn't really a knife guy, so I'm kind of stuck between some choices:
Calypso jr-kind of classy looking, Spydie quality, good pattern, but a little small and PE,
Delica-SE, good all around knife, but I'd probably get it in SS, and engraved, and I don't like SS, and I want to stay away from a knife that could have an SD application
A traditional pattern, like a congress or stockman-useful, and a high Gentleman's factor, but I don't want him to lose a finger, or have to buy a sharpener fot him also,
or an SAK-lots of uses, but same sharpening problem, and doesn't lock.

For me, A tinker and Gunting (or endura) handle most all of my problems.

Any thoughts? it just has to get to my house before Xmas, so I was thinking about 1sks, which should be a ble to ship to me in a day or 2.
-thanks, Joe

If he's not a knife guy, get him a SAK, and of course don't get him a particularly large one. I think even our smaller folders have overtones we know better than to see, but others do flinch from. Red handles, 4 to 6 blades.

spyderco's usually do well as gifts. how about one of these?:

-Jester-Photon-light combo
-Ladybug-Photon combo
-Salsa

or else, like Esav suggested, a SAK's always good too. there's loads of them that DO have a locking main-blade

another interesting gift might be a multitool

You have the knife you should give your brother: a SAK Tinker.

Second choice would be Calypso, Jr.

If you have the cash, the spyderco kiwi combines functionality with that traditional lockback thing. The jigged-bone version is great, and you can get other handle materials as well. It's small enough that nobody sees it as a threat.

Maybe a SS Cricket? They have a nice substantial feel and a fairly high funky-cool factor.

For smaller pocket Knives I like the Spyderco - Navigator.

BUT, have you thought of getting him a good quality Kitchen knife ?
The Kitchen is an area where everyone will always be in need of a good knife and there are many to be found that be in a moderate price range. I would choose a stainless variety with a 3" blade and very ergonomic handle. Just a thought.

Go with one of the new Leatherman Models and I bet he will find some uses for it.

A Victorinox Tinker or Deluxe Tinker would be a great gift, along with maybe a Photon II light.

Victorinox Spartan or Tinker, depending on if you think he's a corkscrew or phillips kinda guy.

Queen Canoe in Cocobolo and D2. Pure class and not likely to intimidate him or raise eyebrows. Once he gets the bug for them he can get his own, but a nice starter would be a trad or SAK IMO.

an old style 2-3 blade slipjoint would work great...

if you want to get something more "recent" you could try a spyderco stainless pe jester or meerkat(who doesn't like to play with that lock?)... or even a spyderco pride(slipjoint).

Get him a Spyderco Kiwi or Benchmade 310. They are both extremely well made and small enough for a non knife knut to throw in their pocket to start the conversion. :)

for my wedding, one of the things that i gave the groomsmen were sog blinks. they are really cool little knives that look pretty classy and dont overwhelm
