Can't Decide: Bone or Ebony?

So I am loving the couple GECs I have on the 15 frame and I've been eyeing the Scout for a while now; trouble is, I can't decide between the ebony handle or the rusted red jigged bone. I already have an ebony Radio Jack which is why I am leaning towards the bone, but then again, I just love the ebony. I'm not to the point where I'm ready to buy two of the same knife in different materials yet. Thoughts?

If you already have an ebony I would try out the bone. I really like the weight of bone and the way it feels in hand.

You really can't go wrong either way but if you already have an ebony knife I would try out the bone. I like them both and the real difference for me is wood just feels a little warmer in your hand I guess is how I would describe it. The rust red is very nice looking I have a couple different variations of it.

The rust red is gorgeous.

Jeff nailed it there, got the exact same knife, not only is the build quality premium, but THAT bone is like Old School Red to my failing eyes! Great stuff.

Regards, Will

The bone adds 8 grams over the weight of wood covers, some of the reds are too orange for my liking, and some lack the dark overdye that I prefer. Look closely at the specific knife youre considering, there are a lot of different dye batches.

Bone is more likely to chip or crack if dropped. Im not a fan of the jigging. My vote is Ebony. The Gabon Ebony GEC is using lately is particularly black and beautiful.

It would help if you post pictures of the exact knives youre looking at.

I appreciate all the input so far. Ordinarily this would be a no-brainer for me and it would be the ebony all the way, but I just got the Diamond Radio Jack in ebony and to me it seems very similar to the Scout.

I'm looking at the knives on KSF so I don't think I can see the exact knife that will ship.

For what it is worth, I have 4 versions of the #15 I carry and have the yellow bone, rust red, ebony and blood red. Handle variety is nice, especially in the same pattern.

I love both bone and ebony, to the point that I can't decide which I prefer.

I either go with whatever I didn't order last, or the last thing I ordered (because it was just so fine). It also depends on the pattern in question, although even there I'm glad I don't have to choose between my sawcut #15 barlows, my smooth bone Boy's Knife, and the various ebony iterations I enjoy.

Short answer: I'm no help at all, other than enjoying the variety! And more of the same. And ebony.

(I looooove me some bone, but keep going back to ebony.)

Okay, go back to "no help at all."

This'd make a great addition to the GEC thread

Variety is the spice of life... get the bone. And who knows, you may surprise yourself and end up loving the bone more than the ebony...!

What is this "have to choose" of which you speak? :-)

Unless you're going after a specific pattern of collecting, why not enjoy variety in the different options?

Well I ended up getting the ebony because I just love how it looks and feels and I'm not 100% sold on the bone. I'm sure I'll end up getting the bone at some point in the not too distant future because I won't be able to help myself and it does seem to make the "same" knife different.

Thanks for all the comments!
