been wanting a dagger style knife for awhile, Just something I want. I also want it to be a carrying and usable knife not looking for another shelf queen to come out once in awhile get admired and go back. Having trouble deciding if I wanna go the cheaper route with the sog "about $60ish shipped" or spurge for the tops My 3 headscratchers are

SOG Daggert 2 "black"
TOPS Rangers Edge
TOPS MAK-7 (really like this one)

What I like about the SOG: Half the price, Rust-less Aus 8 vs high carbon 1095
what I like about TOPS: "Heavy/thicker" , Made in USA, Styling

there's always aus-8 vs etc.etc. steel threads but of these brands how does the tops vs sog do with rust and edge retention.

Well...since daggers, in my opinion, are really only useable for very limited applications, and those applications aren't particularly dependent on the type of steel in the dagger, I would get the one you think looks coolest.

It sounds like this TOPS MAK-7

as for the use I'm not doing any machete work or anything with it just a carry through the mile of woods knife. maybe some general light chopping and defense if needbe "we have wild pigs" sig p226 Elite E2 on on hip and a big TOPS knife on the other at a crossdraw badassery lever +1 notch?

Have you checked the legality in your area? Some states specifically prohibit "daggers, dirks, ...".

Ever heard of Ek Knives? If I was gonna get a dagger, I'd go with one of theirs. Expensive, though. There's also the Ontario SP-54, which I really like the looks of, too.

I have some nice daggers in my collection just not any I'd use what I should of listed originally was I wanted a user dagger. I have a brittish v-42 "original", a gerber mark 2 "original" and an RBH arkansas toothpick like this one: http://www.ebay.com/itm/RBH-CARBON-...810?pt=Collectible_Knives&hash=item2c68ff8f22

but like I said I wouldn't use any of them harshly. the v-42 and mark II are collectible so I wouldn't dare use them anyway

trying to move away from getting too many "just to have and look at" items and grab a few practical/usuable down to earth knives like the tops or a microtec auto :D

Well, honestly, if what you want is a user woods knife, why would you ever choose a dagger? A dagger truthfully seems like one of the least useful blade shapes for general outdoor tasks that I can think of. If I were you I'd skip both SOG and TOPS and snag yourself a Becker of your choosing, in the end it will be MUCH more useful than any dagger in the woods. Honestly, in this day and age, daggers are pretty much novelty knives, the kind you put in a case and look at.

my current carry round woods knife is an ESEE-6P-CP, got it for about $60 shipped awhile back GREAT KNIFE but in my humid ass state "louisiana" it rusts quick, rust wipes off easily though. hence the whole mention above about should i got aus-8 or 1095.. I always keep my knives coated with eezox, the esee still manages to rust anyway

Its not a waste of money if he wants a user dagger. i would pic the tops usmc if i wanted somthing like this, but it would definatly work and the man wants a dagger. There are cheaper options but if this ias the one u like then get it

What do you use them for?

Who cares if he's going to use it or not? He just wants one. There's nothing wrong with that. I only have a problem when people try to justify those wants by convincing themselves (and others) that they're actually needs.

Out of the ones listed I would lean toward the Tops Ranger. However I would keep looking as that may not be your best choice.

Then why make a thread if people can't comment? This is a forum. He can buy whatever without asking us to tell him what to buy.

Most states don't prohibit daggers and dirks per se, just the carry of them. So they end up collecting dust at home instead of dirt in the field. Take Cali for instance. It's not illegal to own a dagger or dirk, but it is illegal to carry it on your person. Most distributors won't ship daggers to states like these.
