Any ideas for dealers or a source to find this size? No luck so far on my own. Hoping you can turn me on to a site I've not found. Would like to find blanks.

Thanks!

From my looking 8mm and 10mm are the commonly produced sizes. my understanding is that they are molded for size and then cut to length, which is why longer rods are more expensive than thicker ones, the other factor being equal.

Thanks. Yes 8 and 10 are easy to find. I tried firesteel earlier and they have all the std stuff as well.

5/16" (.3125") or 3/8" (.375") are probably going to be as close as you can get to 9mm (.355"). Actually if you could find one that was 11/32" thick (.34375"), you'd be just under 9mm.

This may seem stupid, but I'm trying to fit a leather sheath with a loop attached that measures .366" or 9.18mm.

wildmanh - do you know if I can stretch the opening out to fit a 3/8" and if so, how?

You could also bubba it and buy a 10mm rod, chuck it in a drill and sand it down to fit?

While you are looking to buy it online, buy some antler tips at the same time, drill a hole and epoxy the ferro rod into the antler. Drill a hole through the tip and put some shock cord (elastic paracord type stuff) through the top hole and loop that down under the bottom of the ferro rod as a securing device.

When you want to use the rod, pull the shock cord out from under the ferro rod and the piece is now unsecured.

If I can find a pic I well edit to show, Ala your "1,000 words".

Edit: found one.

Regarding stretching it, you can soak the rod holder in hot water for 10 seconds or so, that will allow it to be pliable enough to wet form. Since ferro rods are relatively impervious to water, just mash the larger one in and let it dry. By tomorrow you will have a 10mm homemail for your new ferro rod.

Keep in mind, if the sheath is dyed, the colors may run due to the wet forming. The tissue that is holding the due would be opened by the hot water to allow the wet forming.
I have wet formed dyed leather and as long as the dye was set correctly and the excess was wiped clear, I didn't experience any running of colors.

But there is another option : wrap the knife in saran wrap to make it more water resistant, and soak the whole sheath. Wet form the knife compartment while you do the ferro rod part. At least if it does run, it will look intentional and consistent.

Original first choice was this one. Now that info is surfacing, I may try it. Thanks.

edit - listed diameter is 15mm - anybody have one and agree it's that big?

Many thanks for the info and effort to educate me. Many great suggestions and techniques!

I read 9mm on some page of theirs. Ho hum.

I do know that Amazon over here sells a Blank Firesteel Ferrocerium Rod - 74mm x 9mm that isn't expensive and is free post. No idea about over there.

Leather has some stretch to it. An Army sized firesteel should fit in the hole, if you work it in and go slow. I rounded the end of my Army sized steel so that it would slide in easier.

Any chance someone could measure the true diameter of the Army size please? Don't always trust the specs on Amazon...
