Can't get 1095 as sharp as O1!

I'm perfectly willing to own up to operator error on this one...

But I can not get my Rc3 (1095) as sharp as my O1 steel blades. Same thing with my USMC combat kabar. I'm trying everything on my strop, changing angles, listening, trying different compounds, no compounds etc. Is this normal? I've heard my Mora robust is 1095 and I can get that blade almost as sharp as my more expensive custom O1 blades. I don't know.

The mora is not exactly 1095 and has a very different geometry.

O1 gets very sharp and I haves rarely seen a 1095 blade get to the same level.

I have had the same experience, I can sharpen 1095 pretty well, but all of my O1 takes a screamin edge.... I can't sharpen stainless to save my life though....

I guess it has to do with all the elements (that I don't know about) that make up 1095, that prevent it from getting as fine an edge as O1.

Thanks Knifenut, you're always willing to help The Duder.

Okay, good, I'm not alone here.

I can sharpen my S30V griptilian pretty sharp. In fact, I can get the Griptilian way sharper than my 1095s.

What present day production knives comes in 01 steel? I know there are a lot of D2 blades out there, but I know of no 01 bladed knives.

Blessings,

Omar

O1 like S30V has many more alloy elements than basic carbon steels in the 10xx series. O1 has some elements that help reduce grain size and being a tougher steel also supports higher edge stability so its more likely to become sharper. S30V has a similar reasoning but due to the PM process has a very even distribution of elements and a much smaller carbide size, all of which will support the edge reaching higher levels of sharpness.

Ok, thanks for the quick reply. I knew that GEC used a lot of D2, but have never looked at their Farm & field selections.

Blessings,

Omar

I'm betting you're thinking of Queen, for the D2 blades. So far as I know, GEC hasn't done any in D2 yet (just 1095 and 440C, and the limited options in O1).

I know spyderco has some O1. I've heard nothing but good things about their Bushcraft blade. I know they had some problems with the handle material, but from what I hear, they did a good job on the steel.
