Cant get a good edge using DMT Magna Guide

I ordered a DMT Magna Guide earlier this week and it arrived today. I decided to test it on my Spyderco Manix 2 XL, and was greatly disappointed. I tried reprofiling the edge on the 17 degree setting and progressed through the 4 grits using about 100 strokes per grit on each side of the blade. I even used the sharpie trick to make sure I was hitting the edge. At the end I stropped the knife on a StropMan HD Compact using the green compound.....and the edge barely shaves hair. Does anybody have a clue as to what I did wrong? The only sharpener I've used previously was the Sharpmaker and I could get very sharp edges on that.

You probably aren't getting rid of your bur after each grit progression.

Don't count strokes. Way too many variables in the whole process for that to be reliable. Watch for the burr formation instead; that's the only reliable way to be absolutely sure you've fully apexed the cutting edge. If only counting strokes, I'm virtually certain it hasn't been apexed yet.

Thanks for the advice both of you. I think you're right that it was the burr, I tried again but this time I tried letting a burr form and then drawing the edge through a piece of wood to remove it. Now after stropping the knife easily shaves.
