Perhaps as only a registered member you don't have the private message privilege like before the switch? That might be causing the issue.

Perhaps, hadn't realized my higher membership had lapsed. tried to upgrade my member status and got this message:
"We could not initialize the API to charge your credit card. This is a technical error. Please contact the site Administrator for help."

Maybe only partially fixed? Now the link to paypal is there, but it takes me to a blank page and nothing loads. Both Platinum and Gold seem to do that.
