Can't seem to find the knife I want...

Hello,

Glad I found this forum. I've been doing a lot of searching and learning about knives. I also been doing some shopping for an EDC, but found that most with the specs I want are 4" or longer when folded. I'm simply looking for something shorter.

I am looking for an EDC with the following specs:

** Folder
** 3.5" or shorter when closed
** All metal handle
** Black or blued, handle and blade, hopefully a durable finish
** Combo blade (partially serrated)
** Easy (one hand) open and close
** Blade material AUS 8/440C or better (I might be willing to live with less, if everything else is right)
** [Relatively] lightweight
** Sexy looking :D

I like the CRKT M16-11K, but it's too long for my requirements. I came across the Smith & Wesson SW3300BS SWAT, but I know how this forum feels about S&W products.

I am interested in your recommendation, based on the criteria listed above.

Many thanks!

** 3.5" or shorter when closed!

With a requirement of 3.5" when closed makes this pretty difficult - most smaller one-handed knives are closer to 4" - as you've probably found.....

Nevermind what anyone else thinks -
if you think this looks good, and I'm sure you've been looking -
then for you it is good.

That knife using froogle.com is listed as low as about ~$17 - so it's not really expensive - so try it -

it's going to be a good learning experience - and I don't mean necessarily you're going to find out how "bad" it is - but you'll then have actual practical experience and being able to say what it is you like and/or don't like about that knife -
so the NEXT knife you buy - may then be close to your ideal.....

I also am looking for a knife with a 3" handle, although I want a fixed blade. The small handle is for control in pushing the knife through various materials while keeping my finger on the blade. ( the short, flat butt rests on the heel of my hand.) I will probably have to have the knife made. The blade itself will be just longer than my index finger.
Just thought I would add my two cents about one use for short handles.

Another one came to mind...

I think Camillus had a black CUDA EDC awhile back, now discontinued.
Maybe you can find one on the secondary market.

Good luck,
Allen.

snovvman, check out a black Kershaw Leek.
bumppo, check out any of the smaller offerings from Bark River. if you can't find something among them that you like, check out Gene Ingram's and Charlie May's work; they're both excellent knifemakers, and they each make numerous smaller models.

Since you want a FOLDER, I would recommend either the Leek, which is a small 4 inches when closed, or the Kershaw Mini Mojo. The mini Mojo is 3.5" closed, has assisted opening, the handle is all metal, with a little G-10 insert, and uses the great stud-lock mechanism. The blades in both the Leek and Mini-Mojo are 440A, which is VERY adequate for EDC. Check out this thread to see my leeks. or go to Kershawknives.com to see the Mojo.: http://www.bladeforums.com/forums/showthread.php?t=427460

What do you think?

That Bark River PSK looks perfect for my needs. I guess the rather remarkable price tag reflects the small number available.

Something like that I guess , but can't a puuko in the same steel be bought for a tenth the price. It's nice, but not that nice.

If you mean to indicate that the asking price for the PSK is abit on the steep side, then I agree!

Bumppo, are you looking for a push dagger perhaps?

Many thanks for all the replies. I must say, this is one of the most friendly forums I have come across. For a newbie to post a "help me find what I want" and receive this many helpful replies is atypical. I was expecting "use the search" replies. You guys are great.

I did search, but just didn't find exactly what I was looking for.

Again, thanks for the replies.

In searching more today, I came across several "assisted opening" compact EDCs that sparked my interest. One I found because of the Kershaw recommendation. The Buck Rush, perhaps lower-end on material, looks interesting. There are a few others. What are your thoughts on them?

Also, are there any concerns with titanium or teflon coating on knives that will be used occasionally to cut food or fruit? The two concerns might be with titanium reacting with various acids and ingesting teflon. I don't know enough about it so I figure I'd ask.

I wanted an EDC smaller than 3.5" and around 2 oz. because I wanted to be able to carry it without "feeling it" and having it drag down my pants pocket. I usually wear a formal attire to work, and those suits pockets are not exactly heavy knife friendly.

If you're willing to consider a 4" closed knife then the world kind of opens up with lots more choices.

4" closed folders clip very easily to the pocket, or still can be carried in pocket (with or without the clip removed).

In which case I suggest looking closely at the Kershaw Leek in black model # 1660CKTST for the partially serrated version. It is very sleek and slim. Kershaw claims it is Tungsten DLC coating - which actually makes it less chemically reactive than steel..... (Froogle.com finds these at a low priced at about $42)

Check out these reviews -
Kershaw/Ken Onion LEEK (pics)

Black "boron" Leek

For a less expesive knife that's just as well designed look at the Kershaw Vapor (also designed by Ken Onion) - the black partially serrated version model # 1640BLKST is low priced at about $23 - you can handle a uncoated matte steel one at WalMart who have them at $28......

Both of these knives are frame-locks - which is a good feature, and desireable.

No worry with either, practically speaking. In fact, one of the advantages of working with titanium is that it is so inert. A titanium coating won't react to acid.
