Can't Seem To Get My Volt Shaving Sharp........

I have a Sharpmaker that I use to sharpen all my knives and it does a good job. I can

get all my knives Except the Volt shaving sharp. I've tried everything I can think of and

nothing seems to work. I've used both the 15 and the 20 degree angle with very light

pressure and can't seem to get the m390 steel sharp enough.

Ideas on what I'm doing wrong or does m390 steel need something better than the SM

to get it shaving sharp......or is m390 one of those that's just hard to get shaving sharp.

Help me out here....... :(

Have you tried blacking out the bevels with a marker to see if you are hitting the edge? If the bevel is too steep, then even on the 20 degree setting you will just be hitting the "shoulder" of the bevel instead of the actual edge.

The only knife I own in M390 is a Benchmade TSEK. I have carried it and was impressed with teh steel so far. I stacked 4 pieces of cardboard on top of one another and sliced through them with graet ease, even with the 60 degree inclusive edge. Tradja is correct, color the bevel with a marker and start sharpening, look to see if you are hitting the bevel correctly. Also, don't forget to clean your sharpening stones, use a scotchbrite pad and some Ajax or something abrasive.

I just tried the marker on the bevel trick and yes I am sharpening the edge.

Work up a burr on one side. Give it 50 swipes on one side using the brown stones and check to see if there is a burr on the opposite side. Repeat this on the other side as soon as you feel the burr running the length of the blade.

My Volt is the sharpest factory knife I've ever gotten. Haven't had to sharpen it yet as when I carry it I take it easy!
