Can't seem to sharpen my new SOG

I have a Spyderco Sharpmaker and I tried sharpening my SOG Vision for the first time. The blade is a Tanto made of ATS-34. I've tried twice on both the 40 degree and the 30 degree settings with no success--the blade is duller than when I started out!
I've successfully sharpened my Leatherman to a razor fine edge using the Sharpmaker. Why am I having so much trouble with the Vision? Obviously I'm doing something wrong...I'm also wondering if the shape of the blade and the type of steel is making things difficult.

first time sharpening takes a very long time... you're not creating your bevel yet... on top of this,. ats34 is pretty hard so it's gonna take even longer... keep at it, as long as your hand is steady and consistent, you will eventually get there.

The most common reason is that the edge on the knife is ground more obtuse than the Sharpmaker settings. Use the 20 degree setting on the Sharpmaker and grind until you get a burr, outline the edge with a marker and see where you are grinding.

Lots more details in Joe's Sharpening FAQ. The edge could also be highly damaged, rusted, bent, or cracked. If it was recently very heavy used this might be a concern. You have to grind away all the damaged steel before it can become sharp.

A good ceramic or diamond stone makes things easier. You might also find a small 10x magnifier helpful to see what's happening with the edge.

Thanks for all the advice. Looks like I'll just need to keep at it. The marker on the blade idea is great.
There's always the 2004 blade show (I live in Atlanta) where someone can help. Looking forward to it!
