and i can not sharpen it and i need some help

its an emerson comander with a beveled edge and ive tried
my lansky my dmt my smiths stone and my ez lap diamond

lol and now its dull as hell ive only sharpened it on the
beveled edge and i just dont see the prob im fuggin stumped

any advice would be helpfull thanks people

ohh and one other thing the steel is 154 cm

Commanders have a chisel ground edge right (only 1 bevel on the edge)?
Sounds like you been sharpenin away on the beveled side, and you probably have a hellish wire edge on there now.Won't cut cause the edge is turned sideways.
If you have a strop, use it on the non beveled side and see if you can start to get an edge. With a single edge bevel, you do 99% of the work on one side, but you still have to take the burr off.

If its really bad start over with a fairly coarse stone. Make a few passes on the non beveled side, with the blade almost laying flat on the stone. Then go back to normal sharpening, but make a few passes on the non beveled edge from time to time, with almost no angle to them (blade almost laying flat against stone). For the most part I would just strop the non beveled side alot though.
Hope that helps  I haven't done alot with knives like that.

thanks matt and it is chisel ground ill give what you said
a shot and report back lol thanks again man

I'd try to use any of the "rod" type systems. Trying to sharpen a recurved edge like the Commander on a flat stone is going to be a problem.

Use, for instance, a Sharpmaker 204, using only the corners of the stones, not the flats. Sharpen the chisel edge, giving just an occaisional pass on the flat side to remove any burr.

Hope this helps.:)

I know how you feel. I just finally made progress in my sharpening skills when I came across a "how to sharpen" website. I can now at least sharpen it to the point of shaving hair using the most basic angle sharpener. Still working on "hair poppin'".

Check various internet sites on "how to sharpen...", also check the Emerson site. He gives detailed instructions on how to sharpen his knives.

Basically this is what I do which I learned from a website on knife sharpening (sorry can't recall where at this time):

1. I use a course stone and raise a burr. You can grind away from the edge, towards the edge, or in circles. It doesn't matter as long as you keep the bevel even and raise a burr which is the objective of step 1. I find circles works best for me with enough pressure to squish a grape.

2. Next, use a medium stone and polish the coarse grind marks away using circular grinding motion.

3. Repeat on other side if it's a v-grind. If chisel grind, go to step 4.

4. Remove the burr on the opposite side. To me this is the most important step -- whether sharpening a chisel grind, or v-grind. This step will make or break for a properly sharpened knife.

Generally you do this by lightly (very lightly!) skimming the blade (with the edge side leading -- very important) on the side where the burr has formed using a medium stone. It should only take 2 or 3 swipes with most steels.

5. Use your finest grit stone -- mine is ceramic -- and lightly swipe both sides a few times. You can strop on a piece of cardboard or leather as an alternative.

This worked for me after trying many other techniques. If I can do it, it's dummy proof! ;)

damn thanks clan the detail was good ya gotta
spell it out for an idiot like me so thanks lol

and thanks to nerd too

ya know something i never have a prob with the
so called lesser steels like 440 or case cv or
aus but this 154 has been pretty rough but
maily i think its just because of this chisel
ground bevel edge thats the prob its new to me
but thats why im here for help thanks again guys
ya been a big help :D

when sharpening a beveled edge you have to remove the wire edge from the opposite side of the blade. you can strop it lightly on your stone, much the same way as a wood chisel.

Thanks rev_jch, I had a brainfart and couldn't remember the term "wire edge" when I was mentioning STEP 4. Yes, that's what I consider the most critical step in removing properly.

BTW, Biggman, I found the link. It's: http://www.ameritech.net/users/knives/index.htm

And make sure you use an el cheapo knife to practise on or it will end up with the same fate of my SOG Magnadot.

The poor thing thinks it has osteoporosis! Still works hard for me though inspite of it, the loyal lil' guy. ;)
