I see in the new issue of Tk that there is a knife with a divot in the handle. The divot is there for using the handle as a bearing block for a firebow.
How heat resistant is the G10 or canvas micarta going to be if used in this manner ?
I have seen this feature before on knives.

Any ideas ?

i've seen some pics from people who've used their ESEE 5 or other knife with a divot on the scales for a fire bow drill bearing. it polishes the micarta and turns it dark, but doesn't seem to burn/chew it up.

if your hair is oily, rub that in the divot for lubrication. if you have animal fat that would work too.

this thread on the maintenance forum is a good read: http://www.bladeforums.com/forums/showthread.php?t=199171. i'm not sure if the link/s are included there but i also read somewhere someone soaked micarta in gasoline overnight, lit it on fire and after the gasoline burned out it stopped burning and the micarta held up fine. it's definitely a tough enough material for anything you'd subject a knife to (barring any blatant abuse obviously).

I work in the Gas fired Turbine Industry and both G-10 and Micarta (canvas) will hold up just fine. These materials were and are designed to take high heat and vibration.

Read through this link. It has some good info for spec of the material G-10. I am not conected w/ these guys in ANY WAY I just notice the for sale blocks down at the bottom of there page, sorry about that. So just read the spec info. Rule of thumb G-10 can take temps in the 285'F range.
