Which of these three do you prefer, and why? Im looking at the ESEE 4 lineup, but dont have any experience with the micarta handles.

i have always felt canvas micarta felt warmer? (not sure if that makes any sense to you lol, but its the feeling you get with a fine stacked leather or wood handled knife :)) and provided more traction when wet without being as aggressive as g10... i vote canvas micarta

thanks for ur input without being rude, i dont know very much about this stuff since i am new to the knife community. But, how is the micarta, either canvas, or linen, to clean? Can i take the scales completely off the knife and clean them with soap and water? How exactly would you go about doing that?

hmmm as far as cleaning goes both absorb oils from your hand with use and time... the "weathered" look may or may not be your thing. i personally have never felt the need to really clean my field knives and actually dig the looks from use. you can remove the scales and clean with with mild soap and water and maybe a magic eraser if need be

oh i dig the weathered look, so i assume both the micartas have no problem with water. I know the g-10 will be more durable than either micarta, but i am not too sure about that orange haha

I prefer canvas a little more because it has slightly more grip than linen. Canvas will get dirtier faster than linen I have found.

Both canvas and linen are easy to clean, I don't even bother taking the scales off I just use hot water out of the faucet and scrub them with an old tooth brush and some soap, takes about 30 seconds and they look good as new.

I prefer canvas micarta in rough form for hard use knives, polished linen micarta on nicer knives, IOW the canvas goes better with coated or blasted blades, the polished linen goes better with satin finished blades. I have G10 on several folders, I'm guessing that G10 is stronger and that is why it is used for folder scales more than micarta is. If that's the case then there wouldn't be much reason for G10 on fixed blade knives.

Go with the canvas micarta. Better grip, tough and as far as cleaning, mild dish soap, soft brush. Drys quickly when wet. One problem with some companies is that they buff micarta making it slick, defeats the purpose of the material. If buffed sand it with 100 grit sandpaper to make it rough, better grip.

Canvas Micarta is the winner here, for me.
For all the reasons stated above.

There really isn't any real difference, except for personal preference about the look and how it feels in your hand.

None of them will ever "fail" during use, and since they are all mainly resin (plastic), none will actually absorb anything beyond their exposed layer.

Canvas is my favorite, but I like linen too. I don't really care for G10, and only have one fixed blade left with it. G10 is heavier, and does not grip as well when wet or bloody. G10 is as tough as it gets though, but micarta is plenty tough.

The micatra will show oils from your hand, etc.., but it cleans up very easy. Just use water with dish soap(it has a little degreaser in it), and a tooth brush. Or if it is really dirty use a straight degeaser and a Q-tip, and it will look like new. I don't clean mine often tough, as I kinda like the look of it after some use.

I agree with most everything wrote here, except the grip of G10. Textured G10 seems to have more grip, to me, than either canvas or linen micarta. However, of the 3 pictured, I'd say the canvas micarta.

I went with g10 on my esee 3 and have no regrets then again i use my knife in the rain alot as its my work edc. however on the esee 4 id go for canvas just cause that knife looks alot better than the orange g10 with green knife now if that knife was orange g10 and black that would be my choice

I like the canvas as well. Gojo pumice hand cleaner has worked great for me.
It cleans blood, grease, and sap off, and the pumice keeps it grippy.

I'm a big fan of canvas micarta, I like the grippiness.

Although anything can be made grippy if you texture it right.
