Canvas vs G10

Hello Busse Lovers!

I'm starting to get into Busse Knives and I need help understanding/deciding which handle material to choose. So, I was wondering if you guys could tell me the differences/advantages/disadvantages between choosing canvas or G10 on a Busse knife. Is there any pros or cons? Is one more comfortable than the other? How's the durability between the two? Is it about looks? How do you know which material is right for you? Does it vary on a particular task the knife will be used for? Does weather or environment play a role?
Please share your knowledge and experience down below.
Looking forward to your responses.

G 10 is heavier then micarta. I heat up bees wax into my micarta for a tacky feel. Imho, its all about personal preference. I am partial to the micarta feel. I'd recommend getting two knives in both materials, and then see what you think. Because only thing better then 1 busse is 2 busse.

I think we have all gone through this question.

I settled on canvas because it is grippier in wet environments. I do still have some knives with g10 also. The only thing that will settle it for you is to buy 1 in canvas and 1 in g10. Once you decide which you like then you start getting colors you like.

I believe G10 is less likely to soak up liquid than micarta so can be a better choice for field dressing or kitchen use. The flip side is it’s less grippy. For what Busse offers, G10 often has more appealing / interesting patterns although plenty of companies offer more patterned micarta. In general for me I have a preference for micarta especially given that Busse upcharges pretty significantly for G10.

Wont soak up fluids like micarta. more appealing appearance. The handle shape does a good job for the tasks the knife was designed for.

Micarta feels more clothy, warm. The surface can absorb liquids but they wash off just fine in my experience. (Blood, grease, mud)

G10 feels more rigid, kinda like a dense plastic, cleans up easier, more cold to the touch.

I would go micarta unless you expect to keep the knife forever. Resale of knives with g10 is pretty comparable to micarta, so any extra you spend on g10 can be a loss later if/when you sell

G10 for show, canvas for go!
I tend to agree more & more as the size of knife increases. Pretty much over 5" blade length to me, but like any "rule", there's gonna be exceptions. I really like my P&L Statements in G10. Also have a SJTac variant with smooth G10 & love it. Then there's the 3B2 in black G10...another awesome exception 🤔🙂🤙

Starting out, I only wanted G-10. Tougher, doesn’t absorb fluid or germs, doesn’t hold fluid to possibly rust under the scale. I soon found out that G-10 is also heavier than Canvas. Also, do to it’s solidness, I found G-10 to have some sharp edges depending on the cut of the scales. Theses days, I lean towards Canvas most of the time. Unless it’s offered with the Nuclear Meltdown Treatment or Double Rounded Edges, like the TGULB or P&L Statement. If they’re an option, I’ll go with Black G-10. If not, Canvas. Assuming I’m even given a choice as to which handle material/color I want.

Paper Micarta <on TGLB> is dense like G10...it's outstanding:

Oh I agree wholeheartedly. Personally I love black G10, and I have a good number of them. A few years ago I decided to go with black coating and green mic by default because thats the most practical combo for me. Is that green mic with black G10 on that sjtac? Grexed as I believe they call it. That might be the ultimate combo, the utility of mic with the showy detail of G10. I havent seen grexed mic before, they mostly seem to be with fancier materials.

Same for me.
Big knives=always micarta
Small knives=either, but prefer G10

Basically I want grip and less weight for big choppers, and i want no absorbing fluids on smaller stuff.

Is there any pros or cons?

Yes. This boils down to G10 looking great because of the colors and micarta feeling a lot better, “warmer”, and offering a lot more grip. My favorite is maroon micarta.

Is one more comfortable than the other?

Comfortable? No. Not really. Micarta has more grip.

How's the durability between the two?

They’re both plenty durable.

Is it about looks?

They do look different. G10 looks great and has vivid, nice colors. Micarta looks great too in its own way. Micarta has lots of depth where G10 has no depth, really.

How do you know which material is right for you?

Try both and use your tactile and visual senses to make a decision.

Does it vary on a particular task the knife will be used for?

Yes. Need to do something that requires an iron grip on the knife? I go for micarta.

Does weather or environment play a role?

No. They’re both 100% imperious to any and all weather.

It all basically boils down to which you like the looks of better and fulfills your grip needs better.
