Now don't quote me on this, but if I remember right, caping is the 'careful removal of the complete hide from an animal for tanning and display'. In other words, feet, tail, ears mouth, nose etc.. is still attached to the hide when you're done. Something like that anyway.

I'm sure someone has a better explanation than me. I'm a new bastid.

Max has pretty much got it. I've heard it used for simply removing the hide necessary for a trophy mount. This involves the head and part way around the body. A caping knife is small to allow delicate work. Commonly the head is removed from the body along with a "cape" of hide. The taxidermist does the job of preparing the mount.

Thank you both for the info! I did look up the word in my dictionary but it wasn't there.....so a layman's translation would be skinning, would that be right?
Cheers

Ken--
A specialized form of skinning, right. Skinning a carcass before butchering is a much less demanding task than caping, however, and can be performed best with a larger blade. A "skinning blade" typically refers to a wide, upswept blade in the 4-7 inch long category, with a curved belly. It is designed to separate a large swath of hide at each stroke, by parting the membrane that connects hide to meat. A "caping" knife typically has a blade of 2-4" in length, with a slender profile and narrow, sharp point designed for the more delicate work of removing the hide intact from the fragile areas around eyes, lips etc.

Yes! That is it!! Mostly done these days by Taxidermists becuase most people don't want to ruin the mask on a nice mount!!
Although I have no pics of them on my website, I have made several models and would be glad to send Email Pics to anyone that is interested in seeing one. I stopped making them due to the fact that most of my customers prefer my Small Game model, it also makes a good caping knife. They are small, 1.5"-2.5" blade and work very much like an Xacto knife. Mine look better than an Xacto knife though

.....At least I think they do!!!
