capsule making out of mini maglites

Perusing aluminum capsules I came across this thread

I've got several old minimaglites- AA and AAA

I wanted something that would fit in a pen holder loop and decided to give the AAA a go. I wanted to store a sparklite and several tinderquicks

as turns out the sparklite is just a little large to fit into the maglite- I used a cut off wheel on a dremel (cut at the bottom of the upper threads) and then a small sanding drum to enlarge the aluminum body (upper portion). I went to Ace Hardware and found some 1/2" caps that fit perfectly (they are very snug- waterproof snug :))

they also have plastic caps that would snap in nicely if you wanted to seal one end completely (I couldn't do that as the sparklite would go be the lower threads)- you could make a capsule any length (cutting from the top) snap in a plastic cap (little epoxy to be sure of the seal) and then load from the bottom thread piece

the little aluminum bodies are pretty light- the AAA one w/ both caps weighs 0.3 oz

the thread shows a fire steel secured in the bottom cap- looking at it- it would be pretty easy to do- you'd still have some room for some tinder as well

That's pretty cool. I thought about doing something similar with PVC tubing. Nice mod!
 
Unique Titanium actually makes an aluminum screw on cap for the AA size ones. They aren't too pricey if I recall.

Here is one I made a while back. I cut off the bulb end, machined a teflon plug a little oversize for a press in fit, and used a little JB weld for extra security.

Does anybody happen to have the bulb cap end for a 2 AAA collecting dust?

I bought a 2AAA light and carried it daily, until I lost the reflector end...I found the bulb exposed sticking out of my belt pouch one day. It was a great light and I was bummed. It's perfectly good except I'm missing that one part!
