REVIEW- Car Accident Survival Day

My weekend sucked.
07:14 Saturday morning I got PLOWED by an F250 Work Van. I was a passenger in my father's car, a small Chevy Prism. The guy driving the van (may have fallen asleep) crossed lanes on a highway into oncoming traffic and hit us head on. The combined speeds of both vehicles was around 80mph. I saw this coming from a long way back but there was nothing that could be done to prevent it. I crossed my arms in my lap, closed my eyes and said to myself...."relax". BANG. Actually, I think BANG sums it up pretty well. I was mostly conscious through the whole thing but my father was not so lucky. We bounced 157 feet (adjuster's report) from the impact. Once we stopped I checked myself for major injuries and attempted to reach my dad, who did not seem to be breathing. My left hip was dislocated and pushing on my jeans. My seat belt clasp had been crushed shut so after making sure I could focus enough to use my knife I cut my belt free and then his with my Spyderco. I pushed my door open and fell out of the car. I carefully cut my jeans and belt and then pulled up on my knee until my hip relocated, which was one of the most painful things I've ever gone through. I hadn't realized it but there were some very large pieces of glass in me. Most of them pulled out but some needed to be cut out. At this point the EMT's and Firemen were arriving. They tried to cut my dad out with a hydrolic cutter/spreader and then we both went to shock trauma. I have a torn shoulder ligament, chipped socket joint in my left hip, fractured ribs, broken fingers, sprained ankle, many glass cuts, concussion, and your usual "beat to hell" after effects of losing a fight with a truck. I was released yesterday from the Trauma unit and admitted to the main part of the hospital. My wife went home and brought me my laptop and WiFi card so I wouldn't be to bored.
Not sure if these pics will go through. My wife took them and emailed to me. I'm trying to do everything with a couple fingers so I can't guarantee they will load correctly.

You are a lucky man.. How your dad doing?? is he o.k?? seems like he got the impact on his side. Wish you and your dad to get well soon.

Glad you are OK. Is your dad doing good?

Hope you guys are up and running again soon. :(

I am sorry that you guys got hurt!! How is your Dad? That is why I will NEVER drive anything but a truck, EVER.

Wow, hope you and your father get good care and recovery. People who drive small cars don't seem to have any luck in a crash, not to bother you but if you could detail the cutting of the seatbelts it would be good to know. What model Spyderco and how sharp was it, were there serrations used. I'm asking because this was a point of contention in some discussions on cutting out of a crash [the need for serrations or not].

Be well, and don't get bored!

Spyderco Military plain edge, hair splitting sharp.
Just touched the seatbelt, which was under tension, and it sliced right through, both mine and his. I also cut my leather belt and jeans very easily. A very sharp knife will cut through any fibrous material like seatbelts or clothing without any resistance. If the knife is not razor sharp then serrations are a big help but for small stuff it doesn't make much difference as long as the knife is sharp. Serrations come into their own when cutting heavy ropes, especially when they are of a course material like manilla.

Thanks for the kind words everyone. My dad was released from shock trauma and is now admitted to the main hospital like me. He's not in good shape but he's no longer in "critical" condition.

He has two vehicles, an SUV for personal use, and the small car for work. He is a hospital courier for Johns Hopkins and he logs 300 miles a day. He simply could not afford to do that in his SUV. None of the couriers (there are about 40) drive anything but small cars due to the mileage and vehicle upkeep costs. Unfortunately that job does not pay very well so it is not an option to drive any large vehicle and still bring home enough money for bills.

I see these wrecks nearly every day and pray that it isn't someone I know.
I'll keep you and your family in my prayers. May you and your Dad recover quickly and fully.

Great to hear both of you made it. Hope both you and your dad heal up quickly. Whew that could have gone a lot worse.

WOW. Thank God you are both alive from the looks of that wreak. Looks like the double air-bags did their thing. Prayers and smoke to both of you in healing up from your injuries. Listen to your nurses and PT-er's. Keep us posted on your recoveries.

Very happy to know you and your father are on the mend. Congratulations on having the presence of mind to start taking care of yourself and your father while waiting for EMS. You will be in our prayers.
