today i got a 10'' sub and a amp put in my truck and now the battery meter is low, the guy at the shop told me to get rid of my optima battery and get a 250 dollar one. he said that will fix it. Is he full of it or do i need a 250 dollar battery
its a 1992 suburban, and its a red top battery thats 1 year old.

The Optima should be good...lots of audio gurus run them. Have you had the alternator checked? A capacitor might be a good idea to reduce strain on the system when the bass is going hard.

I'd say he's full of it. :D I used to have a car that ran 3 amps with a regular battery and I never had a problem.

funny thing is its had about 5 or 6 alternators since 2000 all free from chevys life time parts guarantee thing. how much is a capacitor?? im planing on getting another 10 with another amp.

These are very good points. . Did these symptoms start right away, or a few days after? Check to see if the amp was installed correctly and will turn OFF. This could be a point of drain while your car is constantly trying to play catch up.

i just got it done today so yes it did just happen, this is one of the top stereo shops in the south so i think it was installed correctly. im gonna go tommrow and let him hook a new battery up and see what it does, if it does nothing i will see about getting 2 alternators along with a cap.

If you do get a cap, make sure it's installed within the proper distance of the amp because if not, the cap becomes useless. I had one installed by a "good" shop, and soon after I was getting dimming again. When I had everythin reinstalled with a custom amp rack, cap, fuse block, etc...the installer showed me that there was like 4 feet of cable between the amp and cap. It supposedly hadn't been doing it's job.

Sounds like you got All Your Base covered:D

You could ask though to (rewire / re-thread) *forgot the correct word for that* your alternator or an after market Alternator designed for your vehicle and the loads you're going for.

will do thanks for the info.

so you bass lovers whats a song that has alot of bass to it, besides rap. i know alot of rock will kill you in a car with a few 12's lol.
also should i have 2 high quality 10's or just get one 15??

Listen to the Rage's first album (the Burning Monk cover). Everything on there is bass-heavy. Specifically "Killing in the Name of," "Bombtrack," and "Fistfull of Steel".

Enjoy...

And as far as 10's? Get yourself 2 JL 10w6's or 7's in a well-made custom box, and I think you'll be very satisfied. I've been running my 10w6 for 4 years, and just put it into a new '08 Infiniti g-35. Still sounds lovely. I can only imagine what 2 6's or 7's would sound like in a freaking Burban or the likes.

right now i have 1 boston acoustic gtr with a kenwood 800w amp. im eyeing the alpine type X :D:D just gotta sell a few more knives lol.

Depends on your Amp as well. What kind of damping factor does it have. Sig to noise. etc... I would go with two tens or a ten and a twelve. Two amps running to each one with a diff. freq. drop off point. Obviously the lower freq. for the twelve.

But this has been years ago, and my priorities has changed. So has the tech. Thank goodness for google, I know there are site dedicated to nothing else but.

Whatever you do... Make sure your car doesn't buzz like a colony of africanized bees. :D

EDIT: Nod to I'mGatman! JL audio all the way for subs. Orions were my choice of amps. Orion G4's....

A 10" sub and a amp will do shit to your battery, the guy does not know what he is talking about. The yellow Optima, if this is what you have and should have, is a great battery.

i got a red top. and i also have a amp for all my other speakers. so im running 2 amps, not just one.

I'm running 2 amps a JL Audio 10" sub, 4 speakers, on a Motorcraft in my X for years and no problem. Will be getting a Yellow top soon, just for shit's. The Red Top is only a cranking battery, so if it every fails Optimum will not cover you. The Yellow Top is the deep charge for vehicles with more accesories. Maybe this is why the guy told you what he did.

HE HOOKED UP A NEW BATTERY and it helped so tommrow im getting 8 gauge wiring, from the alternator and the batter and he is doing a ground wire to the frame, IDK. so i think this will be it.

i do too lol. what they said about optma batterys is they have great power but the dont charge back up as fast as one made for high end car audio.....
