Took a wonderful trip to the mountains with some friends a couple of weekends ago. Here are a few pictures. We started things out by car camping (arrived past sunset so pitched tent, cooked, etc. in the dark). We were right next to this beautiful river.

Next day we packed everything into the cars and went for a walk up a mountain.

Here's me, for what may be the first time on BF:

Lovely waterfalls on the way up:

Only 3 of the original 8 decided to hit the summit. Things started getting a might bit foggy:

70mph gusts at the summit!!!!!

On the way back down, that waterfall was just too tempting to resist. This is up in NH, and the water was pretty chilly. Renewed my respect for what it takes to stay alive in icy water. Anyone who hasn't been exposed to cold water should try it some time in controlled conditions. It's really quite amazing how much it affects you. First, it makes you involuntary gasp, then hyperventilate. Can feel like you're being stabbed all over. It's a quite shocking sensation. Since I wasn't actually under water, and was able to get out when it got to be too much (though, admittedly with a bit more difficulty than originally planned), it was an AWESOME experience. Wonderful reminder of what it's like to be alive:

That last picture is a classic, almost didn't spot you in there :D

Glad to hear you had a good trip

Nice pictures, CanDo. Good to see people out enjoying the outdoors.

Here's me, for what may be the first time on BF:

Actually not, you posted pictures of you and your GF playing handball (?) Actually, you might have been playing with a sling????

Is that hot dogs and broccoli in the pan?

New one on me.

How's that taste?

Haha, well I didn't plan the meals, I just cooked with what the others brought :). We were so starving by the time that we got the fire and everything ready (3 hour drive, tents, finding dry wood in the rain, etc.) that we downed a couple of hotdogs each just warmed over the fire on a stick before thinking about cooking more. We had hotdogs, we had onions, we had broccoli, and we had beer so I put 'em all together. It was rather good actually. The broccoli really soaked up the beer flavor well. The hotdogs were a bit out of place, to be sure, but meat is meat! If I'd planned this out, I'd have gotten some good spicy sausage to replace the hotdogs, and served with spicy brown mustard (then cook the broccoli separate). As it was though, we were all very hungry and thought it delicious. Toasted hot dog rolls to soak up the liquid.

Thanks, Doc, it's good to be back! I still read as frequently as I can, but have almost no time left these days. Just making time for this trip was near impossible. I'll be on winter break in a couple of weeks and am looking forward to spending my days making some wooden bows, nights reading this site, and weekends in the mountains.

Looks like a blast. Also, looks like you picked the best partners to hit the summit with. The hot dogs and veggies will do, I've eaten much, much worse.

Great shots - that waterfall looks like fun! Cool shot of the girl surviving the wind tunnel on top of the peak.

I've eaten some weird shit with the munchies before, but I think that tops it all!!!!:D

Looks like loads of fun, BTW what is in the pan in the second pic, apples?

Yes, indeed. I wrote up an explanation in another thread, so I'll just copy that right in here:

I was out on a hiking trip the other weekend in the whites of NH when my friend complained that the beer he brought was too warm. We were camped next to an ice-cold mountain river, though, and it certainly did the trick!

On that trip, we car-camped the first night, so weight was no concern. I brought my large cast-iron skillet and threw it over the fire. I invented this recipe for desert based on what we had available and it came out delicious. A little like apple crisp, but not baked.

Melt a few tablespoons of butter into the pan. You could also use a cooking oil. Slice up apples and put them in the butter. I added just a little bit of apple cider to this mix to keep everything nice and moist. Next, add oats (I used instant oatmeal from packets, but just about any type of oatmeal, granola, and/or your favorite nut would work as well). Then its time for the sugar and cinnamon. Use LOTS. Everyone thought I was nuts scooping in a cup of sugar or so, but it was well worth it. Stir everything with your favorite knife (I used my BRKT Aurora) until it turns golden brown. The result is a sticky, crunchy, sweet, cinnamony, goo filled with chunks of apple, AKA delicious. Of the 8 of us, we managed to forget cutlery, so we served this stuff on graham crackers.

AF, this was Mt. Chocorua. We decided to climb it when we woke up after camping and saw the Park Ranger. We asked what mountains were within a fifteen minute drive that would be a good climb, and that's what he recommended. It's a smaller mountain, but we really had a great time. The fact that it wasn't too challenging was also good because we had a few inexperienced hikers with us.
