Met a new group of people that RAVE about camping. Think it's the greatest thing ever. They load up everything AND the kitchen sink into their Land Rovers and high-tail it into the "back country" (rough 4x4 trails).

Sounds like fun to me. Now I just have to decide which knives to take! Probably my mini-commander for general-purpose stuff, but I expect to be carrying my CZ75b 9mm and a "camping" sized fixed blade once we get settled in. I've narrowed it down to 4 -- help me pick the "best" one for this situation:

4" D2 TTKK -- this is actually the sort of think I bought it for, but it's taken up residence in my kitchen drawer, and since these aren't "knife people" I'm nervous about "hey, let me use your knife..."

Next would be the 4" 52100 "pronghorn style" from Bill Burke, set to arrive shortly. I bought this one with "hunting camp" in mind, but it's another good candiate. I'm nervous about it rusting though, and it's pretty expensive -- again the "hey let me use your knife" worries.

I don't actually have a Buck Strider Solution, but it strikes me as the PERFECT knife for this situation, and a nice compliment to the Bianchi UM84II OD-green holster I'll be carrying my pistol in. I just sorta hate to buy ANOTHER knife so similar to what I already have. Seems perfect though.

And finally, I do have this 154CM combo-edge Talon. I bought it as my "lake knife" to use-and-abuse. It would probably be OK in the mountains for around-camp uses. With the full-size Tek-Lok, it should fit just fine on my Wilderness Instructors belt. It just doesn't "grab" me like the others though.

Oh, I do have my Patton 5" ATS-34 "Field Unit", but I'm afraid it's a little big for my first time camping with these folks -- they might think I'm a freak about knives.
:D

So, which one should I bring?

Mike

Aren't you a freak about knives anyways ;) :D
I would think the Talon. I don't think the folks would freak as much.

If these people are going to be scared of a little ol' five inch blade, what are they going to think of the CZ?

Take all of em. If weight isn't a factor, keep your options open. Work up to the bigger ones.

Take them all.

It will give a real chance to test each one.

Man, that TTKK looks like it's just begging to be used. I'd suggest the Buck if you already had it, but looks like you already have a perfect one in the TTKK.

Michael, the Talon looks like it might be the best choice if you don't want to freak anyone out. But, you know darned well that you really want to get that Buck so just go ahead and get it. :)

Haha Stilleto I was going to say the same thing.

I say get the Strider. A new knife is a good thing.

I swapped the mini Teklok on the TTKK with the TekLok on the Talon -- unfortunately the mini doesn't fit my 1 3/4" belt!

Looks like I'll bring the Talon as "loaner" and carry the TTKK.

Yeah, you're right -- I'm looking for an excuse to buy the Buck. I think I'll use my $$$ on other camping stuff for this first trip, but I think the Strider Solution is in my future...

Mike

any of the knives mentioned will work wonderfully, but my vote goes for the Bill Burke. I just got one of the 4in Pronghorns myself and can't wait till I can get it into the field. Expensive? Yep. But the beauty is in the cut and I believe the performance of Bill's blades are comesurate with the price. Besides it's real cool to watch people's faces when you tell them your "user" costs more than their hunting rifle:D I will admit to planning on saving my Burke for fairer weather though. Oregon rain is a real hard thing to hide from outdoors. Have fun no matter which one(s?) you choose:)

The TTKK saw a little use. Carried the Talon on my "gun belt" but never used it.

Mostly used my Trident and showed off these two Bill Burke knives.

Kinda surprised how well this little folder handled everything.

Mike

I saw the knife you got from Bill Burke.... It looks like an Ed Fowler blade... am I mistaken?
