Car Coil Springs

I have a friend who owns an antique car parts store and has offered me some individual (not matched sets) of old new coil springs from the 1940's.
Any guess as to what type of steel these might be and are they of any use for knife making.

odds are its 1095 or 5160. Thats what I've been told.

Alot of the older coil springs are 9260. Studabaker used 9260 for there leaf springs. The only difference between the 9260 and 5160 is there is no crome in the 9260. Here's one I did a few years ago out of 9260: http://www.bladegallery.com/knives/knife.asp?knifeid=2780&pics=small&alt=one

HEY Ray. WHere did you get the info on the Studebaker Springs?


I thought Studie used a different steel than other Car Makers of the time, but I was never sure what it was.

Hey Mike, Wayne had given me a bar of 9260 3 years or so ago that Jeff Carlile had given him to try out. Wayne told me that it was the same steel the Studabaker used for there leaf springs.
