I watched a program called Extreme Survival (from BBC i believe), by a survivalist named Ray Mears who suggested using a half-open car door window as a stone final stage of sharpening after benchstones and leather belt for stropping. he stropped the knife lightly across the top of the open window about three times per side. Anyone heard of this?

newer seen it ot heard about it!!

But I do know Ray Mears knows whats best for his tools so...

Same principle as using a crock stick which is after all ceramic you can also use the base of a ceramic cup or mug to acheive similar results :)

I've heard of it ad even tried it. Never got good results though. But then I'm not used to sticks, just stones.

Same here. I've tried it, and I dont see any evidence that the window cuts the steel, like say a crock stick would. It does give an improvement, but it seems to work like a steel rather than a stone, even though the edges of windows like that are not smooth.

I would recommend against doing this. The glass is smooth and will not hone (abrade) the edge to make it sharper. If you have already honed and stropped the edge it is unlikely to improve the cutting performance of the edge. It will tend to make the edge more brittle by work hardening it.

I do use the edge of my truck window to sharpen my knives. You see...here in Texas, at some point of the hunt, the truck will be close by. Usually to use the headlights to clean the game by. It is convenient, works as well as a fine diamond, and is nice not to have to keep up with a stone.
