car heat and khukuri

A couple of forumites recently mentioned storing one of their khukuris in a car. It can get pretty hot in the passenger compartment in the summer ... > 145 degrees F.
Does this ever cause a problem with melting laha, or cracking handles? What temps are needed before the laha might melt?
 
I have never had any problems and there are days when it gets plenty hot here in Georgia. I would just try to keep it out of the direct sunlight. I have removed the handle of my Fox Folly and it was around 8-10 minutes in boiling water before it really became soft.
 
That's a good question, and I'm betting the laha can become soft.

I wonder what prolonged exposure would do- cycles of heat and cooling. Bet it would weaken the laha eventually.

I haven't had any problems with my villagers that live under the seats of both our vehicles from either hot or cold. YYMV
 
I haven't had any problems either. Both of mine lived in the van all last summer in KY without any adverse side effects.

Between 40 below and 100 outside plastic toys, metal, car parts all break. Laha is heavily organic, though, isn't it?

I wonder if heating all of my handles would help prevent cracks. It would allow the laha to reflow and relieve any stress from the settling of the horn or wood. :confused:
 
What styles of khukuri do folks keep in their cars? Do you use horn handles or wood for this purpose? I would think that the heat would dry out any type of handle material, and cause shrinkage or cracking.
 
I've had my horn handled 15" sirupati in my car for almost two years summer and winter and no problems.... and my 20" sirupati blem had a slightly loose buttcap that tightened up after a summer in the car.
 
140 degrees in air temperature is a heckuvalot different than 140 degrees in liquid temperature....

You can fry an egg on the sidewalk mid-summer in the southwest, but for some reason, your skin doesn't boil off....:rolleyes:
