I got a call from Mom this morning (she calls in the evening so you know its not good when you get the morning call). A woman went into a ditch, lost control and ran into my Mom's house at 11:00 last night. Mom lives on a dead straight peice of dirt road, so this is not something that you would think ever could happen. Luckily she hit the corner of the house and not several feet to the North, because she would have ended up in my Mom's bedroom! The driver is lucky she didn't hit a few feet to the South or she would have hit a big tree dead on.

She did some damage, broke the corner of house, smashed off a bunch of clapboards, broke a window, may have damaged the window unit air conditioner and broke the filler pipe to the oil tank in the basement. I don't know what else might have happened. I've called a contractor to look at it. I don't want the insurance company telling her she just needs a little paint and a few clapboards without making sure there is no structural damage.

If she puts a stone wall, or even just one or two large rocks, between her and the road it won't happen again -- and the drunks won't hit the rocks either. Even drunken idiots and people who are half asleep are smart enough not to drive into a rock.

Steel posts work too but rocks are more decorative.

It could have been worse.

Yes it could have been worse.I remember an incident when a drunk went off the road into a house .It ended up in the basement ! Immediately the car and house was fully engulfed in flame .The sleeping occupants barely had time ot get out .
Yes large rocks are the answer !

seems like the fire department would have had someone check the structural integrity of the house before leaving for the night, and allowing her to stay in the house. If it was not structurally sound, they would have made her get out and stay out until the structural integrity was fixed.

Police were called but no fire deparment came (small town with a volunteer department).
