Hi,

My roommate is getting a new car this week. He's worried about which car insurance to get. We live in Seattle, he is 22 years old and would rather spend less on insurance and just be more careful driving. Can you recommend a car insurance that fits his needs? I promised him i'd ask the forum as my way of helping him.

Hope to hear from you all,

Vit

I hear that Geico, and USA (if you are a vet) is good. Farmers is good. I have had State Farm for years and have been satisfied. I generally don't want car insurance where there is no local agent if I need to discuss things.

Geico is about 15% more expensive that anybody else. They do have great commercials though;)

If you have AAA in your state they are very cost effective, for my wife and I but we are in out mid 50's.

Mercury insurance is another low cost one if they are in your state?

Pemco used to be pretty good - they're the only ones in Seattle who would insure my "high performance - high risk" self for a reasonable price (<30 years old with an '85 Hond CRX - hi performance, ha ha). I haven't had their coverage for years but it is worth a shot. I may even be able to remember my agent's name if I think hard enough!

I would never had suspected that. I haven't shopped car insurance in many years. The truth is that I went with State Farm with my very first car in the 70's and have been a customer ever since.

Find an ” independent” insurance agent and get a quote. They will have access to multiple companies because they aren't stuck with only state farm, farmers, all state, etc. Also get quotes from agents with those companies too.

You need to understand coverage and what your state requires. Remember that insurance gets used when there is an accident. It's not something you plan on having happen. That's why it's called an accident.

I am 32yrs old and am very satisfied with Progressive. I used probably 10 different insurance companies over the years as I have had 15 different cars and have lots of gaps where I did not have a car. For example- out of the past 5yrs i only had a car for about 18 months. I have actually had to use Progressive when a car ran a stop sign and hit the side of my car. They were very nice and prompt. The others drivers insurance, Farmers, was actually a breeze to deal with also, and from the way they dealt with me, I would have no problem recommending them too.

I also found out that if you rent a car and don't have comprehensive and collision for your own insurance, that it will cost more. However when I called Progressive, while at the rental place, the representative was very helpful and said I could add comprehensive and collision immediately and just cancel when I return the rental car. So I did that and it saved me $50 on my rental and only cost a couple bucks for basically a few days of extended coverage from Progressive.

I do handle everything over the phone and online with Progressive, so if your roommate wants to do things in person, it could be a deal breaker.

Qe've been with Geico since about 1987, and both the cars, the bikes, and house is insured by them. They have been outstanding in their customer service, especially when something happens. We've had two bad home catastrophes with the a water heater leaking flooding, and Geico was on it in hours, handling the water damage company, and repairs.

Another time I hit a deer down in Virginia, and they were great again. They had an adjuster on the scene the next boring at the deanship where the car was towed, arranged the rental car, and the repairs to the damaged car. No increase in rates.

My truck was hit while parked by a hit and run driver, who was later caught. Again, Geico was right there with a check for the body shop with zero hassles.

A few winters ago we had some ice damage, and they just told us to e mail them a photo, and they sent a check that covered the whole drywall repair and repainting.

Yeah, they may be a bit more expensive, but they are well worth it for the level of customer service you get from them. Insureence is like food. You can go eat at a fast food burger place, or go to a nice restaurant and have a meal prepared by a chef who knows what he's doing, and a wait staff that is on the ball.

Keep in mind that most states (maybe all I don't know) require the insurance company to include underinsured or uninsured motorist coverage. This protects you if you get hit by an uninsured driver or a hit and run. Get an agent that can explain that to your friend. Sometimes the cheapest insurance isn't the best option.

Your best bet is to find an independent agent and have them quote you with multiple companies and see who's the cheapest. There are so many variables involved that just because company A is cheaper for your parents or your friend it does not mean they will be the cheapest for you.

And don't skimp on the liability. Your life can be ruined in a moment if you have low limits and get involved in a serious wreck that results in injuries and lawsuits. Your wages will be garnished for the rest of your life if you have state minimum limits and you are found guilty and have to pay out damages in a nasty wreck.

At that age and in a large metro area, probably no such thing as cheap. Depends on his vehicle too. Is he on his parents medical insurance still?

Shop, shop, and shop around. Nothing wrong with an independent agent either. Print out the estimates and don't be afraid to show 'em, "Co. A is this much, can you beat it?"
