Car Kit Heat Damage

Any good suggestions on what food stuffs to keep in the "in-the-car" kit?

What is best for long-term?

Or, do I just have to rotate out every couple weeks/months??

I have some of those lifeboat-type rations that suck the spit out of your head, but prefer to keep something a bit further up on the food chain.

Suggestions? Experiences??

Sardines!

I like sardines and kippered herring snacks. They come in neat little tins that can get banged up, freezing won't destroy them, though it might affect the texture some, and most folks don't like 'em, so you don't have to worry about getting your stores raided.

Beyond that, candybars are the absolute best for high calories. Loaded with fat and sugar, easy to metabolize. Power bars are really good too.

I recommend mainstay bars and raisins. Heat won't bother either one of them. Also, I'm not a big fan of MRE's but they would do OK in a hot car trunk.

Don't forget water - add a few drops of bleach to keep the bacteria under control.

Canned goods like beans and corn go for a while in the car. Sardines are OK, but I prefer the kippers because they are drier and don't seem to change so much in texture and flavor after 6 mos. in a hot trunk. Raisins & nuts are ok for a while as is dried fruit if it is dry enough. I make a home-made trail mix that has gone a long time in the trunk and not gone rancid. Granola bars are good as are certain simple dry cereals (like shredded wheat and grape nuts) You can also learn to make hardtack (basically flour, water, and a little salt [you can add a touch of baking soda too] baked very slowly. Lasts over a year as there is no shortening in it to go rancid). Finally a couple of MREs round out the collection. Don't forget water in sealed containers.

All the food in my car that has moisture like the MREs, nuts/fruit, and the canned goods get replaced every 6 months. The cereals, granola bars, hardtack, etc. go for a year at least between recyclings as can the water bottles so long as they have never been opened.
