Please forgive me if this has been asked before.

What do you think should go into a car kit?

In a worst case scenario, stuck overnight to a few days in sub-zero desert conditions or stuck in overnight to a few days in 100+ conditions?

Is this just for conversation's sake, or are you putting such a kit together? Extreme cold and extreme heat are two very different scenarios, and you may want to devise a kit for each extreme, i.e. a summer kit and a winter kit.

As for contents, there are numerous threads on here about this topic...as a gold member, you should be able to search for them. Use the term "bug out bag" or "b.o.b.", which is theoretically a kit for "bugging out" or getting the heck out of town in the case of a political or natural disaster, but these kits often function as everyday sets of supplies. I know I keep mine in my car, and I use it frequently.

I was thinking about something that just stayed in the car and didn't even get opened unless I really needed it. My initial idea was like a pelican box 10 by 15 by 3", cause I already have one. I know a lot of fellows just keep their cars fully stocked all the time, but space becomes an issue. I know you can fit a lot of goodness in an altoids can; what would be your car essentials? I live in a part of the country, Utah, where within a week we can have weather between two pretty fierce extremes.

I am in the process of creating one of these. It will be an all purpose BOB that will stay in the trunk. So far here's my list, but I'm not done yet:

Duct tape
road flares
paracord
first aid kit
water
protein bars
extra socks
lighter/matches/tinder
compass
extra boot laces/shoelaces
hand sanitizer
flashlights with extra batteries
hand crank flashlight
cheap multitool (i carry one on me anyways)
wrench
screwdriver kit
overnight toiletries in travel size
extra ammo for whatever gun I am carrying(usually a 38sp)
buck 119
case sodbuster
poncho
extra jacket (oversized so I can use as blanket)
spare cash/coin (ya never know)
running list of names/telephone numbers (cell phones fail)
30ft nylon webbing(no real reason for this, I just have it and it isn't doing any good in
my house)
benadryl (I keep bees but am not allergic, however, get stung around the face or several times, it can rock your world without taking some benadryl)

Also in the car I have the basic stuff, de-icer, coolant, oil, maps, and so forth. will be throwing a spare pair of boots in the trunk too, even though I can usually wear boots to work or anywhere else for that matter.

also, having plastic bags in a hot environment is a good way to trap condensation in a hot weather scenario. Sometimes its not about having the perfect gear, but the perfect raw materials.

Well, just some useful basics:

-means to make fire, whether matches, lighter, firesteel, etc.
-space blanket or other means to keep warm (extra sweater, hats, gloves, etc.)
-rope/string/cordage. Parachute cord is popular, but by no means the only option.
-trash bags have a million uses...especially the thick industrial type.
-first-aid supplies, i.e. band-aids, antibiotic ointment, medical tape, etc.
-a little bit of high calorie food, both for nourishment and for the calming effect it has.
-basic tools, such as a knife (obviously) or multitool, pliars, pry bar, etc.
-car supplies, such as jumper cables, tire repair kit, etc.

I'm not great at picturing how big the space you mentioned is, but this will give you a place to start!

EDIT: Dave beat me to it! Great list.

Exactly what I was thinking the "raw materials"! These are some great ideas. Thank you for your time.

With extreme cold, you need some way to store liquids without having them freeze and burst the container. Learned that on a -10F degrees hunting trip in Montana after driving up from sunny SoCal!
