Car repair manuals?

I have been looking for a car repair manual for my 2001 Grand Marquis. The Ford/Mecury website sent me to Helm for the "factory" service manual. Looking at Chilton and Haynes, all I find are manuals for models years up to 2000.

Specifically, I need to replace the EGR valve based on the computerized code. The "ping" I occasionally get seems to be a fairly common problem related to carbon build up. I am reasonably handy with tools but, I am a little hesitant to just start taking stuff off the car and cleaning it up.

I will probably just take the car to the shop and cough up the ~$300 for the repairs but, I would like to read up a little and see if it is something I could do myself.

I would appreciate a link to a Chilton type repair manual for my specific car or, words of wisdom replacing the EGR Valve and cleaning out the carbon.

Thanks!

I have been happy with my manual by Haynes I purchased it at Auto Zone and they do seem to have most models covered and they can order one if they don't have it on hand. Just out of curiousity have you contacted a Mercury dealership? All emissions system components are covered under an extended warranty due to EPA regs. Yours most likely is still covered by that and won't cost you anything but time.

I think the dealer visit is a good idea, it might still be under warranty. If not you can definatly do it yourself, its not that hard. Take a ride to barns and noble, or borders. I know they have repair books, they have automotive technology books that show you how to do everything and how it all works. Good luck, im sure you will do fine.

I like the motor books (older ones...)

Chilton is "ok" Haynes is "ok"

The best of the best is a dealer shop manual :D
