What do you all carry in your vehicles?

I stopped at an accident earlier this week and thus have been motivated to update my emergency equipment in the vehicles. I have always carried alot of equipoment, but have been thiking of more.

What kind of flares do you carry, if any?

Anyone have a badgelight on the flashlight in your car?

Anyone have one of those hammer things to break glass out of the windows of a vehicle (and I think it has a seatbelt cutter in the handle).

Will list my car safety equipment later, time now for bed...

Clay, what's a badgelight?

I don't carry as much as I should, or used to. I do have a center punch velcroed to the steering column (instead of a hammer-$3 as opposed to ~$15). I used to always have a blanket in my car, but at the moment I don't. There's a few assorted tools in the trunk, and a first aid kit, plus a Cold Steel entrenching tool. What I really need to add is a fire extinguisher (a good refillable one) and some of those reflective triangles. There's usually a jug of water, a jug of premixed antifreeze/water, extra oil, and jumper cables. If I know I'm going on a trip I usually throw a couple of sleeping bags in, a better flashlight, and some extra water.

A badgelight is this neat little strobe that attaches to the back of a maglite (or Streamlight SL series) to make you more visible at night. You can see them at www.badgelight.com Tim Flanagan (Nor'east Knives) also carries them.

Let's see, in the truck, I have an old army blanket, jumper cables, 2 canteens, 100' rope, 20 or so bungies, 200 or so wire ties of different sizes, duct tape, assorted sizes of wrenches, couple of flares, first aid kit (Johnson and Johnson one with some extra triple antibiotic ointment, gauze, etc), mag lite, krill lite, Magna Pro screwdriver, 2 pair work gloves, extra oil, electrical tape, safety goggles. That's all that comes to mind right now, though I throw a snowshovel in there in the winter.

Anyone know a good source for flares? They are expensive!

Let's see, first aid kit, fire ext., gloves, triangle, etc.

I keep a box of rubber gloves from WalMart right behind the seat. If you stop and help, those should be the first thing you put on...

I don't have a center punch, but keep a Spyderco serrated blade in every vehicle for cutting seat belts. I hope it's enough for breaking a side window, I don't know.

Spyderco Matriarch in the driver's side door storage, center punch in the console storage, CQB1 in the glove box, Busse Basic 9 in the trunk. OK, truth is, I don't have any room in the house for any more knives, so the overflow goes to the car.

Cell phone, with cigarette lighter power cord, in the glove box. First aid kit, small tool kit, tire inflater with built in safety light, in the trunk.

Add a bag of cat litter (the cheap kind). It's good for traction if you get stuck in ice and snow.

A tool is, basically, an object that enables you to take advantage of the laws of physics and mechanics in such a way that you can seriously injure yourself.

I've got a big duffel bag in the trunk that contains two army surplus blankets, jumper cables, a can of tire inflator, a Cold Steel shovel, a 16" HI kuhkri, ammo, duct tape, flares, Bic lighters, space blankets, a rain poncho, paracord, twine, a 3D Maglite, locking pliers, multibit screwdriver, a Cold Steel Bushman, some lightsticks, an army surplus water bag, survival rations, waterproof matches, a well-equipped first aid kit I assembled myself, and probably some other stuff I can't remember right now.

The trunk also may or may not contain my bug out bag, which has a large assortment of survival gear.

I have other stuff in the car itself, including a 6c Maglite that makes a handy baton, an ASP window breaker, a SureFire M3, a Leatherman Super Tool, an auto-rated pepper spray, a Cold Steel SRK, assorted magazines, etc.

With a street price of less than $30, everyone should have a Cold Steel shovel in there. I'll also agree with the kitty litter in the winter. Other than that, the standard first aid kit, markers, and jumper cables. When I can afford it, I'm going to get a Pelican 1750 case and put a bail out kit into it for the truck - food, water, gear, firearm, etc.

If your in the habbit of stopping at accident scenes,I would suggest a few things.First scene safety, that is not adding yourself to the list of victims.Stop a few car lenghts behind the wreck using your car as a shield, people have been known to smash into the wrecked cars and kill the rescuers.Put your fourways on, pop your trunk put your flares down. Now you can think about going to the scene to help.Ems gloves and glasses a must at this time.

What ever you do don't move the patients, leave them in the car, treat them there, assuming you have the skills.Airway, breathing, circulation, treat in that order along with spinal precautions. Running up and pulling them out of the car is the worst thing you could do.The exceptions would be if you have to do cpr,or the car is on fire or some other immediate life threat.

Good advice, Lone Hunter.

Let's see, I was inventorying the truck this weekend and some stuff I didn't mention above:

18" HI Ang Khola Khukuri,
hacksaw with extra blades,
craftsman prybar,
several types and sizes of pliers,
fleece jacket that got slightly melted in a few small spots in the dryer(a little scratchy but still warm)
antifreeze

Lesse...
Toolkit, first aid kit, 2 blankets, case of 20oz watter bottles, entrenching tool, flares (the old fasioned ones, old enough I kinda wonder if they'll still work) spare v-belts, spare spark plugs, spare air filter, a new fuel filter (I have yet to install) duct tape, 2 maglights, an inflation pump, a can or two of tire inflator, a roll of shop towels, some Goop hand cleaner, two pair binoculars, 2 frisbies, a soccer ball, 2 kites w/string, a pair of tennis shoes, an LA/OC Thomas guide, some other regional maps, a couple extra knives, and a case of MRE's (not standard carfare, I just haven't taken them out of the trunk in the month since I bought 'em)

Egads, how do I fit all that crap in there?

Dave

And in case anyone was wondering, Yes, the soccerball, frisbies and kites are safety equipment, my life would be endangered if my niece discovered I no longer had them in the car.

A syllogism is a logical statement in three parts.
This is not a syllogism.

That's easy.....
Busse Battle Mistress under the seat, an ASP baton in the door pocket, and a small Chris Reeves fixed blade in there too. A cell phone plugged into the dash.....and countless CD's all over the place. A spare baseball cap and a pair of shades round out the cab.
Aloha.

You don´t need one, just your trusty Maglite and a Spyderco Rescue (or a Harpy, maybe).
