My son has a 1998 Legacy. Nice car but it has a am\fm cassette player and he's 16; I don't think he's ever seen a cassette!

I'd like to get him a basic am\fm- cd\mp3 player, maybe with something to plug in an ipod or something like that.

How do I know if the radio will fit a 1998 Legacy or are they all standard sizes?

I know I shouldn't have waited till a week before XMas, but anyway

Thanks for your help.

I would not necessarily purchase from there ($$$$) but Crutchfield has a car selector thingamajig (technical term) that allows you to see what various car audio components will fit a specific car.

most likely, any that you choose will fit unless the oem equipment was a 1.5x or 2x standard height like a lot of manufacturers do. In that case, you would have to purchase some trim meant to fill the gap created when installing a standard height player. The width and depth, in my experience at least, is almost never an issue.

Does it have good sound? You can get an adapter to plug in an Mp3 player. The adapter goes in where you put a cassette.

Actually, even if the car has not so great sound, you'd be the hero if you got a fancy new iPod and then spent a little extra on getting either a cassette adapter (cheap, dead easy to use, wally world carries 'em) or a fm transmitter (little more expensive, but no wires, bit harder to find). That way he gets to listen to his music not just in the car, but elsewhere as well.

Just my $0.02...

A new head unit will make a big difference. It will optimize the orginal speakers capabilities. Those tape things that you can connect to an ipod are terrible. They have lousy sound and are just a pain in the ass as they somtime can become jammed into the tape player. A new head unit with a cd player and an auxillary port will be found for around $180 installed at best but. Does your son have an ipod or similar MP3 device?
