Hi,

The Lansky Puck and some cheap Carbarundum stones
Use with oil or water?
Also I have heard of window cleaner instead of oil
Water is so less messy, but will they clog?

Information please

Thanks

Depends on the exact stone and what you are trying to cut with it. I would recommend sticking to oil, mineral spirits or something similar (naptha, white gas, kero, etc. if you prefer something lighter in viscosity), but give it a try with water first and see what happens. If it loads up, lap the stone with a diamond plate and switch to oil or one of the others.

I've used my old carbarundum stone dry for many years with no problem. Once in a while I just dust them off with an old toothbrush. They work use fine. Try it for a while.

With mine, usually dry for light maintenance & touch-ups; for heavier grinding, I prefer to use water with some liquid dish soap; makes clean-up a breeze as well. Oil would be fine also; but once the stone is oiled, it'll be somewhat difficult to revert back to dry use or with water, without first un-oiling it. Used dry, a previously oiled stone will get sticky and tends to clog up very fast, and water will tend to bead up and roll off of it.
