Carbide Platen length, 8 inch vs 10 inch?

After reading all about carbide platens I decided that my Reeder would not be complete without one! My pyro glass platter is developing gouges.

The Reeder comes with a 9 inch platen. The carbide platens come as 8” ( 7.67” true length) or 10” (true length unknown). I have a 4 inch contact idler wheel and it will be tight trying to fit a 10” platen, would need to bevel the back of a 10mm platen support plate to avoid hitting both wheels.

So, wondering what if anything one gives up with a 7.67” grinding surface? I think my old grinder was 9 or 10” too.

Want to get into doing some chefs knives…Will the shorter platen be a big handicap?

Thanks!

Chris

I would go with the 8 inch and mount it to the 9 inch platen. I have both and the only reason I upgraded to a 10 inch is the TW-90 has a 10 inch platen, while the Pheer has an eight inch. I don't imagine there will be any impact on regular grinding.

Use the 8" one.

I have a 10" carbide platen for my Reeder, but that is because I have a 10" platen mount setup with a water cooled backing.. It is great on longer kitchen knives. For most folks, the 8" is more than sufficient.
The carbide platen on myTW-90 is 8".

Thanks for the replies. Got the 8” on order. My water cooler will fit even the shorter length. Will probably make up a new backer and keep the old 9” glass in storage.
