Carbide Size Cheat Sheet Plz

Hey all.

Did some searching, with no luck.

Would someone with the knowledge kindly list the particular elements in steel that produce carbides, indicate which are coarse, and which are fine ?

Or a link to such a chart.

For example, i know D2 has very coarse carbides, whereas S110V has very fine.

Please educate me.

Carbide size is highly variable. Chromium, tungsten, molybdenum, vanadium, niobium, and iron are common carbide formers. There are different types of carbides formed with the same element. Heat treatment and processing play a large part in carbide size. Chromium tends to be larger, depending on which one, but its not a rule. Vanadium carbides are thought of as smaller, but mainly because they are found in powder steels, which makes almost all the carbides smaller.
 
Thx. I had a feeling it wasn't that simple.

Meanwhile, i found a free knife steel app created by zknives that is quite extensive and educational.

It clarified things a bit and also makes for some good reading.
