No more slippery flipper.

I've been agonizing over the thought of taking my die grinder and cutting some jimping on the flipper of the Domino but was concerned it just wouldn't turn out as well as I envisioned.
I got a carbidizer delivered today and after working on a few lock faces I took a look at my new Domino and had a revelation. Carbidize the flipper.
I was looking at some grip tape to apply but it would never last so this is a permanent(?) fix. Either way it's much grippier now and works well with gloves even.

Before this little mod I always had to position my finger correctly to get a positive opening. Probably my big mitts or something but it really kept the Domino from being a daily carry. It will see more use now.

Nice idea! I have never thought of that before, now it's time to go play with the carbidizer........

Good idea. I have one on the way myself. That is a great idea if folks want a non slip flip. Some like ZT have a hook to them so you cant miss. Thank you for sharing.

Thanks everyone.

It did turn out well. I wanted something effective that looks as though it is a standard feature and won't necessarily devalue the piece. I believe it fits the bill. Can't put it down now.

The 0566 could use the same treatment.

I'm going to do the same with a couple of my flippers and was thinking it may help on a few with no thumb ramp jimping but I don't want to get too carried away.
I am going to carbidize a cheap utility blade I have to experiment with self-sharpening.

Nice idea. I'd do it to my Kwaiken, too:

How much does one run?

I looked around and the only affordable carbidizer I found was around $235. I've found a few other projects for it as well so I'll get my money's worth eventually.

Now that I've posted the price I'm sure someone will come along and show me how much I overpaid. Always happens. :D

Great idea Barman! I think you may have started a new trend here. Do you think carbidizing would work well in the place of jimping in the usual spots as well? Looks a whole lot nicer than grip tape.

I've got my used Chokwe that has developed a few scratches that I carbidized the thumb ramp on today. I don't know whether to call it a thumb ramp or just the spine but it's not slippery any more. ;) It was a small peeve that has now been remedied.
I'll post up some pictures later. I'm busy with admiring a sweet new custom I just had delivered today. :)

I finally got around to getting a picture of the Chokwe that I carbidized.
Has a nice grip now. Not too much though. I'm looking for a piece of sandpaper with the proper grit to make a comparison.
It's going to look a little sketchy in the hardware store rubbing my Chokwe. :D

Looks quite functional Barman. I had another thought since you're playing around. I don't like low rider clips because they leave nothing for me to grab onto to remove the knife from my pocket. Maybe some carbidizing on the outside of the clip would provide the traction needed to get a good grip.

That's not a bad idea.
I'll give it some thought on an interesting design pattern then attempt it before my daily java consumption.

That's a really clean job you did on that Domino Barman. Great concept. My Domino took awhile to get the smooth action on the flipper but it's a joy now.
