Carbon fiber and acetone

Was having trouble with a ZT and the screws and had heard that soaking in acetone will help loosen it. I placed the bottom half of the scale in the acetone to get all of the screws wet. I then googled if acetone would also mess with carbon fiber, which it is HIGHLY suggested you not, so I took it out. Should I be worried about damage to the carbon fiber scales?

All the fiber composites have fiber and a resin. Acetone might dissolve the resin [i don't know what that's made of ] but it shouldn't effect the carbon fiber. In any case keep solvents off fiber composites.

i always resort to heat gun for stubborn screws and usually works...and have heated screw driver to almost red and then inserted to screw and have very good results when heat may damage surounding area..jeff

Rather than annealed and ruined any more screw driver. May need to invest into a soldering iron, small tip can be used with pinpoint accuracy, supplying constant heat, on small screw head to aid removal.

Op, since acetone is the solvent for most resin used for composites. Degrees of damage is equal to length of exposure time.

i solder every day at my hobby store..for to get good heat transfer it has to have a bit of solder on the tip to transfer heat quicka nd efficiant.but if held on the screw long enough it still transfers but heats up surrounding area a lot..which is not bad in most cases and just a point of info for those that dont solder much...jefff

Tried the soldering iron, didn't work and I didn't have enough patience. Just sent it into KAI and requested that they not use threadlocker on screws, we'll see how that goes. I think their knives are built like tanks because they douse them in threadlocker.

It's not that they use to much loctite, it's the kind they use...don't know what it is, but it's white...they will most likely replace all the screws.

Kai will take care of you and they are pretty quick and will sharpen it while it's there to a factory edge.

When you get it back, use blue loctite and you won't have any problems

Very true. Use with care, helpful especially on red Loctite.

They do make heat transfer enhancing grease - such as those used on automotive alternator contacts, to assist heat transfer. Dip the tip and good to go.
