How should I get the carbon fiber scales on my next custom finished? A grippy texture is supposed to be too rough because there might be splinters hurting my hands. On the other hand I don´t want the knife to be slippery at all.
The looks are not so important, performance is.

Please recommend a suitable finish.

I currently have 3 custom JW Smith folders with cf handles. All three are finished with a smooth surface. I don't have a lot of problem holding on to them. I had a fourth JW Smith framelock with cf overlays that had been either bead blasted or ceramic peened. At any rate they had a flat finish which I liked and a grippy surface that i also liked. I am going to have JW make me a folder and I hope to have some of the F-18 carbon fiber used for the handle. This is the trim from the actual F-18 fighter jets and is a much denser weave and a random weave at that.

Art,
The pattern on the f-18 material isn`t random. It takes on a random appearence as the slabs are sanded through and the pattern becomes distorted.

even though i have other questions about it, look at the carbon fiber on the bm770. it seems to be a good compromise between grippy and smooth. only problem (besides my other issues with it) is that it stains. i am almost sure if i got it full of (animal) blood it would be red forever. i may be wrong, though.
