I really like some of the spyderco's out there with modded handles and what-not. I have a white FRN endura 4 and an abalone spyderco kopa. Well, on a bit of a whim, I came across this caly, and I had just been reading about them on this forum, so I impulse-bought it.

I have to say I love it. It looks cool, is the perfect size (similar to my kershaw leek, but a touch bulkier). It is not a fast opener: my endura is, but I have noticed that this and the kopa have beefier steel spacers incorporating the lockback mechanism, and they are very, very solid in locking and closing, but much harder to flip open. One trades quickness for a return of a wonderful, solid, quality feeling to the fit and finish. You can flip it, but it takes a good bit of coordination.

I only have a few sucky pics but here they are:

And this is a filched pic of my kopa:

I should add that this knife came with the sharpest blade I have ever witnessed from the factory. I have a couple of kershaws that were very sharp out of the box, and a sebenza that was also very sharp. I have one benchmade that came to me new from the factory that was pretty damn dull, but another that was super sharp. This cali, though, is scary sharp-- I could barely brush my fingers on the blade. I push cut a very heavy cardboard box that even gave the seb some trouble, like it was butter-- I kid you not. Oh, I nearly forgot-- the blade on this thing is that new-fangled zdp189-- so that probably has something to do with it.

Anyway, just wanted to share. (Nobody around here shared my enthusiasm-- my wife just keeps saying "I don't get it," and "I'll never understand men." I don't bring up shoes or purses, because that strategy would just backfire. She rolls her eyes, but she doesn't complain-- she's a good woman).

Congrats on the ZDP Caly! You have now 'bitten the apple' of Spyderco and ended up with one of the best knives made...period. Enjoy.
