I just got to check out a carbon fiber civilian, it's a wicked blade. I passed on the knife, but fell in love with the thickness, shine, and contouring of the carbon fiber. I was wondering if the carbon fiber in the civilian is the same as teh carbon fiber in the new police? Thanks in advance. -Lev

Correct me if I'm wrong but it think carbon fiber is carbon fiber. I don't think there are different kinds or grades of CF.

carbon fiber may be similar in its mfg. These would be very thin, dark rods, not much thicker than a hair. The weaves used and the epoxies used are quite different fom different mfrs.

SkagSig40,

You stand corrected. There are numerous grades and types of carbon fiber. First of all, you can get the type derived from PPA (pyrolyzed polyacrylonitrile) of that from pitch. Next, each of these types of fibers has different combinations of specific strengths and stiffnesses. Then there's unidirectional tow, woven cloth (which comes in a myriad of weaves and combinations), and....

Also, as Sal alludes to, the matrix materials available include epoxies, phenolics, polyimides, and a whole host of polymers, each with its own combination of proerties that can also vary significantly from diffrent manufacturers. It's a lot more complicated than the layperson would realize.

Cool! You learn something everyday! So what is the strongest kind of CF? What is the best type for knife handles?

You're talking another set of trade-offs here dealing with cost, appearance, manufacturing costs, mechanical properties and material availability. (And probably a number of additional factors.)

There's no one answer. Perhaps you could ask a specific person or company why they chose a particular material for their application on a particular knife. Perhaps there's a good, standard material available, like G10 in glass/epoxy laminates. Again, the deeper you dig, the more there is to it.

carbon fiber may also look different if it is contoured, instead of being left flat.

Hello, My Name is Gadi and I am a CarbonFiberHolic...

some great answers - thank you very much. also - and my favorite - are the not so black kinds...some are reddish...some are bluish...and they are oh so sweet...

Gota go get my medicine...
